Navigating the journey of motherhood is no small feat. After enduring pregnancy, childbirth, and challenges like the dreaded sleep regression and the trials of toddlerhood, I’m starting to feel like I’ve got a handle on this whole mom thing. Gone are the days when I felt the need to spike my morning tea with a little something extra. However, with potty training, transitioning to a big kid bed, and the impending “Terrible Threes” on the horizon, I know my sanity is always just a tantrum away from collapse. So, before that happens, I want to share some sanity-saving strategies for my fellow stay-at-home moms.
1. Don’t Hesitate to Seek Help
I’ve always struggled with asking for assistance, a trait I attribute to my well-meaning parents who emphasized independence a bit too much. While I’m grateful for my self-sufficiency, it can be exhausting striving for perfection. Remember, it’s perfectly fine to admit you need support.
2. Prioritize Date Nights
Initially, the thought of leaving my child with a stranger for an evening out felt insurmountable. But after being home full-time for over two years, I’ve come to realize the importance of reconnecting with my spouse and enjoying adult interactions, even if just for a couple of hours each month.
3. Watch Your Snacks
For months, I’ve found myself juggling blogging and snacking on unhealthy treats. While the instant gratification felt great, it hasn’t been kind to my mood or waistline. Moderation is key!
4. Get Moving
With my husband’s work schedule, my workout time often falls early in the morning. Although it’s tough, I find that starting my day with even a brief 30-minute exercise session boosts my energy, patience (sort of), and mood while also keeping me from reaching for that morning wine.
5. Take Adult Time Outs
There are days when everything feels overwhelming, and I’ve learned that stepping away for just five minutes can make a world of difference. It helps me put everyday frustrations, like a child’s tantrum or a spilled drink, into perspective.
6. Introduce Some Flexibility
For the past couple of years, I’ve stuck to a strict schedule, which has been beneficial for my little whirlwind. However, I’ve discovered that allowing for a bit of spontaneity can be refreshing.
7. Know Your Limits with Alcohol
There’s a fine line between enjoying a glass of wine and overindulging—especially when you’re dragging yourself to an early workout while listening to the same children’s song on repeat.
8. Get Outside
Staying cooped up indoors can lead to feelings of gloom, so I make a point to leave the house daily. Whether it’s a trip to the store or a walk around the neighborhood, getting fresh air works wonders for my mood.
9. Find Your Passion
Whatever it may be—be it crafting, cooking, or blogging—find an outlet that brings you joy and make time for it. It can be incredibly fulfilling and beneficial for your mental health.
10. Accept You’re Not Superwoman
While it’s tempting to do it all at once, I’ve realized that sometimes, it’s essential to let go of the need for perfection. After all, stressing over every little thing can lead to health issues, and that would certainly take the joy out of my wine!
In summary, motherhood is a wild ride filled with ups and downs. By implementing these sanity-saving tips, you can not only survive but thrive as a stay-at-home mom.
