Stop everything you’re currently doing and download the complete seven episodes of the S-Town podcast right now. Trust me, you’ll want to settle your kids in front of a screen for a few days, plug in some headphones, and let go of any mom guilt—it’s that captivating.

I devoured the entire S-Town podcast in about 48 hours, which is probably a testament to my lack of self-discipline. During that time, I honestly can’t recall if I showered, if my kids were fed, or if the outside world even mattered. Someone remarked at the start of the podcast that listening to it feels like diving into a novel—and that couldn’t be more accurate. Except it’s all true, featuring a potential murder, an eccentric clockmaker with a treasure trove of secrets, hidden gold, and an unbelievable twist that you will not see coming. I actually learned quite a bit, folks.

Our protagonist, Jack L. Thompson, despises his hometown of Woodstock, Alabama, yet he can’t figure out why he’s never left. The podcast’s description lays it out: “he asks Sam [a producer from This American Life] to look into the son of a wealthy family who has allegedly been boasting about committing murder. But when another person turns up dead, the quest for truth spirals into a bitter feud, a treasure hunt, and the unveiling of one man’s enigmatic life.”

Oh, did I mention it’s free?

S-Town (short for Shit-Town) comes from the creators of Serial and This American Life. After spending nearly seven hours with Brian Reed, I feel like we’re best friends. He brings the town to life in such an engaging, humorous, and relatable manner—it’s as if I was right there alongside him in Jack L. Thompson’s intricate world, or in the tattoo shop, contemplating the confrontation with a possible killer, while he connects the surprising threads of this small community.

Having grown up in a small town filled with quirky characters and unresolved mysteries, I can appreciate the producers’ skill in peeling back the complex layers of culture, socioeconomic issues, and race in an Alabama town. I’ve dreamt about visiting Woodstock, and yes, I’m a bit obsessed with this story.

I won’t spoil any details; you need to experience the suspense and drama for yourself. At one point, I had to pause just to pick my jaw up off the floor. I recommend experiencing it with someone else so you have someone to share your astonishment with—or else you’ll end up being that annoying friend (like me) who urges everyone to listen.

According to sources, the S-Town podcast broke records with over 10 million downloads in just four days. Once you press play, you’ll see why.
