School Fundraisers: My Kids Didn’t Win a Prize, But They Gained a Valuable Insight

The atmosphere was alive with excitement and filled with school spirit. As a parent, I felt a surge of joy watching my children race around the gym, music pumping, as they participated in a fundraiser to support a new playground. The energy in the room was tangible, and it was heartwarming to see the kids unite for a common cause.

Teachers joined in the fun, dancing along while students ran alongside parents and siblings who cheered them on. A group of little girls held hands with my niece, who has a disability, as they walked together, embodying the spirit of community. It was a wonderful day, reflecting the kind of nurturing environment I hope for my children — one I deeply appreciate.

With a spring in my step, I left the school feeling uplifted. But when I picked up Max, my second-grader, I was taken aback to see him with a forlorn expression, tears welling behind his glasses. He immediately asked if I had entered his pledges into the system. Panic set in, but thankfully, I had.

Max explained that only he and a couple of classmates were left out of receiving prizes after the event. His younger brother experienced the same disappointment. While his friends eagerly compared their rewards, Max hurried home and retreated to his room, wanting to be alone.

I was left feeling perplexed and concerned. I witnessed a joyful event; how could this happen? As I heard Max sobbing in his room, I realized that while they had pledged money, the check wasn’t due yet. My protective instincts flared up, and I briefly contemplated contacting the school to express my frustration about this perceived unfairness.

What about the children who couldn’t contribute? It seemed to overlook those without the means to ask family members for help. My discontent morphed into anger.

Yet, after a moment of reflection, I decided to hold back my impulse to assign blame. I began to think about the larger picture. If I assumed good intentions from the school, what lessons could we glean from this situation? I came to understand that despite my extensive reading on allowing children to face setbacks and “healthy struggles,” acting on my emotions can often lead me astray.

I recognized that this could be an opportunity for my boys. I knew that rewarding financial contributions could set up an unfair dynamic for those less fortunate, and I plan to address this with the principal one day; as someone with privilege, it is my duty to speak up.

Instead, Max and I discussed how his disappointment stemmed from feeling excluded, not from missing out on a flimsy prize. We talked about the deep sadness that comes when you feel unnoticed, especially after you put in the effort. I highlighted that while he was born into privilege, many children experience exclusion regularly.

I shared my own childhood experiences of feeling the sting of seeing someone, like my sister with disabilities, face unfair treatment. I encouraged Max to remember his feelings and to always be mindful of those who might be left out. It is essential to notice, empathize, and take action when we see someone being ignored. This is a privilege and a responsibility that comes with being part of our family.

By the end of our conversation, Max seemed to grasp the essence of what we discussed. I know this is a topic we will need to revisit often. The Fun Run didn’t end ideally, but it still offered valuable lessons. As a mom, I learned the importance of stepping back. My boys connected with the feelings of exclusion, which is something they don’t often encounter, and hopefully, this will help them grow into compassionate advocates for others.

Ultimately, we learned that taking the time to pause, reflect, and communicate is far more valuable than any fleeting prize. While my boys might prefer a fun accessory over a heartfelt discussion now, I trust that these conversations will resonate with them as they mature, allowing them to become empathetic individuals long after any temporary rewards fade away.
