Dear Parent Who Enjoys Snow Days,
I genuinely like you. I really do. However, I find it hard to comprehend your enthusiasm. You seem like an ordinary person until a snow day is announced, and suddenly, you’re all smiles and cheer. I’m starting to think you might not fully grasp how snow days operate, so let’s break it down.
When school is canceled, your kids are home with you. If your reaction is still one of joy, I can only assume one of the following is true:
- You’re being sarcastic.
- You work outside the home.
- You have a nanny.
- You’re on some really good meds.
- Your kids have tied you up and are speaking for you.
There simply can’t be another explanation. But to bridge the gap in our understanding, let me share why my response isn’t a cheerful “Yay!” but rather a frustrated “Ugh!”:
- I have no desire to be a short-order cook for the day.
- I need to write, but I can’t focus while listening to the endless cries over broken bands in their Rainbow Looms.
- I prefer to visit the bathroom without an audience.
- I feel guilty if I let my kids spend the entire day glued to screens, yet the constant chatter is overwhelming.
- I have to share my snacks, and let’s be honest, that’s just unfair.
So, I hope you can see my perspective. If you can’t empathize because you’re busy making hot cocoa for your blanket fort, let me ask you this—can I drop my kids off at your house? Just for a day, please. (Unless, of course, school is canceled again tomorrow.)
Warm regards,
Jamie
