We Must Address the Deadly Connection Between Gun Violence and Domestic Abuse

In a tragic incident this week, a shooting at Maple Valley Elementary School in Riverside, California, resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including an 8-year-old student. The assailant, who had a history of criminal behavior, killed his estranged wife, Jessica Taylor, who was teaching at the school. He also fatally shot one of her students and injured another before taking his own life. My heart goes out to the families affected by this senseless act of violence.

This shooting highlights the troubling relationship between domestic violence and gun violence. Having experienced the threats posed by an abuser with a firearm, I understand the urgency of this issue. Eight years ago, I sought refuge in a women’s shelter after my husband’s abusive behavior intensified. Despite obtaining a protective order, which was meant to safeguard my young daughter and me, the situation escalated instead.

My ex-husband broke into my home and assaulted me, leading to his arrest. However, after only 15 months in prison for his crimes, he was paroled just four months later. One day, after returning from grocery shopping, I came home to find him waiting in the dark, armed with a shotgun. I narrowly escaped with my life, a chilling reminder of the risks posed by domestic abusers.

Even after this traumatic experience, the family court system continued to fail me. Now, as a co-parent with my abuser, I am forced to navigate life with the person who once threatened my safety. It is alarming to note that over 40% of fatalities in mass shootings involving domestic violence involve children. This statistic underscores the need for us to recognize domestic violence perpetrators as predictable threats who must be kept away from firearms.

Survivors of domestic abuse often find themselves trapped in a system that allows their aggressors repeated chances to harm them. Jessica Taylor, like many others, had every right to live without fear of her estranged partner. It is imperative that we educate men against abusive behaviors and treat both domestic violence and gun violence as critical public health issues. Keeping firearms out of the hands of those who commit domestic violence is crucial.

Since my life-altering experience, I have collaborated with advocacy groups, such as Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety, to raise awareness about the lethal connection between gun violence and domestic abuse. I have connected with countless volunteers who are dedicated to preventing dangerous individuals from obtaining firearms. The work ahead is substantial, and we need more individuals to join us in demanding safe communities free from gun violence and domestic abuse.
