An Apology from the Mom Who Misjudged Me

Last weekend, I walked into a restaurant with three of my kids when a stranger approached me and said, “I’m sorry. I judged you when I saw you walk in with your kids…and I just, I just had to apologize.”

I was dressed in an off-the-shoulder shirt, skinny jeans, open-toed heels, and a bit of lipstick. As a 33-year-old mom of four children under the age of nine, I often spend my days in pajamas or workout clothes, reserving any dressing up for special occasions. However, that evening was unique. My husband had planned a dinner out with our youngest, so I took the older three to eat and enjoy some time at their favorite arcade. I felt it was worth making an effort.

Upon entering the restaurant next to the arcade, I noticed a few glances. It’s something I’ve become accustomed to, especially since managing my children can often feel like a circus act. That night, though, they were surprisingly well-behaved, blending in with the lively atmosphere filled with laughter and arcade sounds.

Yet, it seemed this woman had already formed an opinion about me. Her judgment likely stemmed from the way I was dressed, perhaps leading her to believe I was more focused on my appearance than on my children. Maybe she noticed that I took my 4-year-old onto my lap when she wanted to be close. Perhaps she saw me being playful with my kids while we waited for our food, or when we bowed our heads to pray before eating.

I’ll never forget her words as she approached me, “I’m sorry. I judged you when I saw you walk in with your kids…and I just, I just had to apologize.” I took a moment to absorb what she was saying. Instead of probing further, I simply placed my hand on her arm, smiled, and replied, “Thank you. That really means a lot. You didn’t have to say anything, but I appreciate it.”

Her response was heartfelt: “No, I needed to. Thank you for opening my eyes tonight.” We shared a brief hug, and just like that, I was back to chasing after my children.

I may never see this woman again or know her name, but her insight served as a reminder of the importance of compassion over judgment in our shared journey of motherhood. No matter the circumstances, there’s always room for understanding and kindness.
