As a black woman deeply committed to intersectional feminism, I often receive inquiries about how others can contribute to racial equity, especially since the recent election. It’s encouraging that so many friends and acquaintances want to help, but it can be overwhelming to guide them constantly. I don’t keep a handy list of causes needing support, and it’s not practical to have to look everything up or consult someone else for recommendations.
Realistically, people can do their own research. It’s beneficial to seek out information first, then reach out for clarification based on my lived experiences as a woman of color. If I’m unsure about something, I’m more than willing to direct you to someone more knowledgeable. This approach alleviates pressure on me and ensures that you receive the most accurate information.
For those genuinely dedicated to the movement but unsure where to start, I highly recommend the Ally Action Box.
Founded by two black women, Sarah Mitchell and Janelle Carter, it emerged in response to the Safety Pin Movement that gained traction after the election of the previous president. Many people of color perceived this movement as insincere, viewing it as a way for white allies to alleviate their guilt rather than take meaningful action.
Mitchell and Carter, both rooted in black activism, created a monthly subscription box designed for “white individuals who want to consistently support Black liberation financially while engaging in actionable support work for the movement and learning how to dismantle white supremacy.” This initiative encourages white allies to take meaningful steps toward supporting Black lives, all while gaining guidance and educational resources from black women.
The Ally Action Box is crafted by black women to uplift other black women. Proceeds from each box are donated to Black Women Rising, providing cash assistance to individual black women working towards the liberation of black people but lacking the financial resources to further their efforts. Each month, a woman is chosen at random to receive these funds, making your subscription fee impactful. This has to be far more appealing than travel-sized beauty products.
There are various subscription tiers ($25, $50, $100) that include monthly tasks aimed at educating allies about specific topics and historical figures, exclusive calls to action, and access to a private Facebook group for subscribers to engage in discussions, share research, and ask questions. Each box is themed; for example, December’s theme was “Radical Compassion,” which involved exploring the life outcomes of elderly black individuals in comparison to their white counterparts.
Since I’m not their target audience, I spoke with a friend who subscribes to understand her motivation. “I want to take action. This was a fantastic way to engage, and I feel really good about where my money is going. While donating to organizations like Planned Parenthood and the ACLU is vital, I believe nonprofits often have their own hierarchies, so I wanted to support black women directly,” she shared.
When I asked why she prioritizes donations to black women, she explained that she credits much of her understanding of activism to them. She has also connected with other subscribers and participated in local calls to action, demonstrating her commitment to the cause.
According to Mitchell, the target audience for the Ally Action Box is those who recognize that race is a significant issue, feel compelled to act, and are unsure where to begin. It is crucial for white individuals who feel the urgency to take action to seek out opportunities to do so. If this resonates with you, I encourage you to subscribe and move beyond inaction. Don’t rely on people of color to do the heavy lifting—use this platform to propel your involvement and support a meaningful cause.

In summary, exploring the Ally Action Box is an excellent way to support racial equity while educating yourself on the issues at hand. It provides a structured approach for those who want to be active allies without relying solely on marginalized communities for guidance.
