In an effort to create a more inclusive experience during the Easter season, some malls across America are introducing a sensory-friendly Easter Bunny. This initiative is particularly aimed at children who may feel overwhelmed by the typical bustling mall environment, which often includes loud music, crowded spaces, and distracting sights. For families with kids on the autism spectrum or those with other special needs, these sensory overloads can make traditional Easter Bunny visits impossible.
On April 2, in recognition of World Autism Awareness Day, families will have the opportunity to participate in quieter, more controlled Easter Bunny photo sessions at select malls across the country. Autism Speaks has collaborated with Noerr Programs Corporation to launch the “Caring Bunny” initiative, designed to foster special connections between children and the Easter Bunny.
The Haywood Mall in Greenville, South Carolina, has already kicked off this initiative with great success. One parent, Melissa Johnson, shared how she traveled nearly two hours to ensure her son, who has anxiety in crowded settings, could finally meet the Easter Bunny. “He wouldn’t have done this in a typical mall setting,” she said, emotional about the experience. “We were so excited to hear they were bringing back the Easter Bunny!”
The Caring Bunny experience is tailored for children who may need additional sensory considerations, physical assistance, or developmental support. Malls participating in this initiative will reduce noise levels, dim lighting, and turn off distractions like fountains and escalators. To minimize wait time, they will implement a numbering system and provide engaging activities for children while they wait.
This thoughtful approach allows families to capture precious memories without the pressure of a chaotic environment. Photos taken during these sessions are cherished keepsakes, perfect for sharing with family members. Many families have already begun posting their experiences on social media using the hashtag #caringbunny.
Nearly 100 Simon-managed malls are participating in this heartwarming program, and you can find the full list on the Autism Speaks website.
