Get ready, because the highly sought-after Hatchimals will be making their way to Target stores this Sunday, December 11.
According to a statement from Target, “Target locations nationwide will start receiving shipments of Hatchimals ($59.99), with stock being replenished throughout the week.” These adorable toys are likely to fly off the shelves (limited to two per customer) so be sure to check your local store quickly.
What Are Hatchimals?
For those unfamiliar, Hatchimals are plush toys encased in an egg that “hatch” after a wait of 10 to 40 minutes. Once hatched, kids can “raise” their Hatchimals, teaching them to walk, talk, and engage in games. While I haven’t personally interacted with one, I can imagine they may become a bit grating, but kids seem to adore them. Despite the variety of Hatchimals available, they’ve quickly become difficult to find in stores and online.
Resale Market and Pricing
If you’re desperate, eBay has listings, but be prepared to pay a premium. The lowest price we found was $93, with many going for $100 or more. It’s hard to justify such an expense for a toy that might not hold their interest past the holiday season. The parent company, Spin Master, has acknowledged the overwhelming demand, stating, “The consumer response to Hatchimals has been extraordinary, exceeding all expectations. This is a special season and we don’t want anyone to be disappointed, nor do we support inflated prices from non-authorized resellers. While additional product will hit retail shelves in December, we anticipate this inventory will also sell out quickly.”
Tips for Parents
If you’re determined to grab one of these fuzzy friends, it might be wise to set up camp outside your local Target. Sending your partner to a different store could also increase your chances, as Target hasn’t specified which locations will receive the shipments. If camping out or spending a fortune on eBay sounds unappealing, Target is also offering Hatchimal-themed gift cards. This way, you can wrap up a fancy IOU for when they’re back in stock. Just remember to avoid taking your kids to Target until you know for sure the toys have arrived. Alternatively, you can print out this festive letter from Santa explaining why a Hatchimal didn’t appear under the tree this year.
As with any popular toy fad, the biggest challenge might just be keeping your kids engaged with it after the holidays.
