It’s Impossible to Get Parenting Right All the Time

Parenting is undeniably tough, and I often find myself feeling overwhelmed by the reality of it all. It’s not quite the joyous experience I had envisioned. While I never anticipated it would be easy, I expected to handle various situations with more grace and composure.

Being a parent is incredibly rewarding and profoundly meaningful, revealing the depths of unconditional love. Yet, I must confess that lately, parenting has been quite exhausting, leaving me feeling emotionally and physically drained. This has led to a growing sense of inadequacy and an overpowering guilt that’s difficult to shake.

The challenges of parenting are numerous and varied, making it clear that perfection is unattainable. Nevertheless, I strive to be the kind of parent who:

  • Never loses their patience.
  • Never raises their voice.
  • Never feels let down.
  • Doesn’t take things too personally.
  • Always brings fun and joy.
  • Has all the right answers.
  • Makes the best decisions.

However, I frequently fall short of this ideal. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that I can’t remember the last time I had a full night’s sleep, or maybe it’s the weight of stress that sometimes feels unbearable. There are days when I feel like I’m barely holding on by a thread.

This is when the guilt creeps in.

  • I feel guilty for seeking a moment of solitude in the bathroom.
  • I feel guilty for wishing for more time alone.
  • I feel guilty when I long for the office instead of being home with my kids.
  • I feel guilty for losing my temper.
  • I feel guilty for taking things too deeply to heart.
  • I feel guilty for anticipating bedtime, just so I can enjoy a quiet moment.
  • I feel guilty for experiencing all these emotions, fleeting as they may be—because I love my children more than anything and can’t imagine life without them.

You might wonder why I’m sharing this. Why admit to such perceived failures? It’s because guilt can be overwhelming, often leading us to believe we’re alone in our struggles. Yet, I’ve come to realize that there is indeed a less glamorous side to parenting. The truth is, parenting isn’t always perfect or fun.

Remember, you are not inadequate. You are not a failure. You are simply a dedicated parent having a rough day, week, or month, and you are not alone in this journey.
