You’ve probably seen our posts creeping up on your Facebook feed. You’ve been invited to our parties, and let’s be honest—seeing a message from us pop up in your inbox might send you into a mini panic. We’re the MLM women that everyone loves to despise.
And I totally get why many people have a strong dislike for those of us involved in multi-level marketing. The stereotypes are there for a reason, and trust me, they can be incredibly frustrating. Depending on our strategies, we might add you to groups without so much as a heads-up. We could even send friend requests to your grandma’s neighbor just to widen our network. Our social media feeds often look like a never-ending parade of stock photos and memes, all in an effort to sell you our latest product.
I understand—we can be annoying. Really annoying.
But many of us are diving into MLMs for a variety of reasons, none of which involve pushing you to unfriend us or to burn a doll in our likeness.
For some, MLMs represent a path to the life we dream of living. You might think we’re just trying to peddle stuff you don’t need, but in our eyes, there’s hope for a brighter future. The odds of striking it rich? Probably slim. But every little bit counts in our world.
For others, MLMs are about reclaiming a sense of identity. We pour our time and energy into our kids, partners, and homes, often losing sight of who we are as individuals. These business models remind us that we are more than just moms or wives or daughters. They give us something to call our own.
And let’s not forget that some of us are trying to model alternative paths to earning a living for our kids. We don’t have to stick to the 9-to-5 grind for decades; we can work from home or travel while working or even be entrepreneurs. The options are limitless! The key is to show our children that making money doesn’t have to fit a singular mold.
I truly hope that those in your social circles who engage in MLMs respect your boundaries and your time. I hope they accept your “no” gracefully and don’t hold grudges. I hope they ask for your permission before adding you to countless groups without your consent. And even if their feeds look like infomercial central, I hope you can see the passion behind their relentless posts and recognize that they are pursuing something meaningful to them—just like you are.

In summary, we might be the MLM ladies you love to hate, but we’re also women seeking identity, purpose, and new paths in life.
