Panic struck the Ohio State University campus today as news broke of an active shooter. The university’s Twitter account has been posting real-time updates, and it’s enough to send chills down anyone’s spine. According to reports, eight individuals have been hospitalized, with one in critical condition. The incident is still unfolding, and the school’s social media is keeping everyone informed.
The first alert was sent out at 9:56 am, setting a grim tone for the day ahead. Just moments later, the OSU Emergency Management department provided additional guidance for students. By 10:35 am, the latest update was shared, keeping the campus community on high alert.
Watts Hall, the materials science and engineering building, is at the center of this harrowing situation. A student, Jake Anderson, recounted, “We heard sirens blaring while in class; suddenly, everyone received the emergency alert. Some classmates mentioned hearing popping noises right before the alert, but I didn’t catch it myself. We’re currently sheltering in place in a nearby building.”
Jake also tweeted a video showing law enforcement officers setting up a perimeter, clad in what appeared to be bullet-proof vests. “The officers are gearing up with heavy-duty gear. There are just so many cops around here; I haven’t seen anyone go into the building,” he added.
Another student, Sarah Mitchell, noted that she and her roommate heard what sounded like gunfire from their dorm. “It truly sounded like gunshots, and shortly after, we heard the wailing of sirens. We can’t see the actual scene because of a dorm blocking our view, but we can see the police cars from where we are.”
Meanwhile, the campus newspaper’s Twitter account reported that students were being moved away from the area as police continued their investigation. With over 65,000 students at Ohio State, our hearts go out to everyone affected by this turmoil. We’ll keep you posted with any new developments.
UPDATE:
CNN has reported that one suspect has been shot and killed by police, who are currently ensuring that there are no further threats.
