I’m Embracing Christmas Cheer Early Because the World Needs a Little Extra Sparkle

Last week, while driving my kids around, I stumbled upon a radio station playing Christmas tunes. At first, I was taken aback, much like the shock of seeing your teacher at the grocery store in sweats, buying wine. It felt so out of place and wrong.

But once I registered the festive melodies, my immediate reaction was, “Oh, heck no! It’s not even the holidays yet!” I felt annoyed, like when I’m told by the store that it’s time to buy school supplies while I’m just trying to enjoy a day at the pool. Seriously, Target, give me a break!

I tried to convince myself that the holidays were still far off, but then one particularly chaotic afternoon, as my kids squabbled and I read yet another dismal news article, I thought, “Forget it! Let’s deck the halls!”

I know that bringing out holiday decorations this early is a major holiday faux pas. Honestly, I’m not even that into holiday décor. Rearranging furniture for a prickly tree that sheds needles is a hassle, and I can barely keep the bathroom clean, let alone find space for a mountain of cheesy decorations.

Plus, I’m breaking the unwritten rule of “No Christmas Before Thanksgiving.” I mean, we haven’t even pulled out our turkey yet, and it’s still pumpkin spice season. But you know what? This year, I’m throwing caution to the wind.

Sure, it feels a bit odd to hang tinsel while leaves swirl around my yard on a sunny day, but who cares? I’m all about gratitude, but I’m not too keen on decorating for a holiday with a questionable history. I’m ready to toss aside the moldy gourds and embrace all things merry. We need joy around here!

I want sparkles and glitter! I’m craving red ornaments against shimmering silver tinsel, blue Hanukkah stars, and twinkling lights. Luckily, I’ve got a vase full of last year’s ornaments and didn’t take down my outdoor lights. #lazinessiswinning

Instead of waiting for the day after Thanksgiving, I’m pulling out the red and green bins today. Bing Crosby will be my soundtrack as I trim the tree, and I’ll binge-watch “Love Actually” for the umpteenth time, laughing at Clark Griswold’s antics in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”

I’ll be spreading holiday cheer to strangers, lighting pine-scented candles, and splurging on shiny decorations at the craft store—even though I’m not crafty. I might even slap some cheesy Rudolph decals on my old minivan. Whatever it takes to feel merry and bright! And if you’re one of those “wait until after Thanksgiving” types, save it. No one needs a joy thief around! Plus, studies show people who decorate early tend to be happier.

Let’s face it: the world can feel chaotic, and we need to find joy where we can. So, I’m giving a big thumbs down to the negativity by extending my holiday season. The world needs more sparkle, and I’m here to provide it.
