Homebodies Are Smarter, Claims Science

A recent study suggests that individuals who prefer the comforts of home over social outings might possess higher intelligence levels. The research, published in the British Journal of Psychology, backs up the introverted lifestyle, noting that while social butterflies tend to be happier, this doesn’t hold true for the more intellectually gifted among us.

Finally, I can use this as an excuse next time Lisa insists we hit up the latest party!

According to Elite Daily, this study surveyed 15,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds—including various races, religions, financial statuses, and sexual orientations—and discovered a correlation between a preference for staying home and elevated IQ levels. Perhaps this explains why voter turnout was low last week? (Just kidding!)

The study concludes that “more intelligent individuals experience lower life satisfaction with more frequent socialization with friends.” While I’d love to claim this research validates my lifestyle choices over the years, I’m not entirely convinced.

There could be many reasons behind this finding. It doesn’t necessarily mean that homebodies are smarter (though my own penchant for staying in certainly supports that theory), nor does it imply that party lovers are less intelligent (but then, there’s also Derek from accounting). Perhaps the highly intelligent homebodies feel discontent when socializing because they’d rather be binge-watching their favorite series or diving into a great novel. Conversely, maybe those out partying are actually involved in a sociological experiment on the smarts of homebodies.

While researchers have good intentions, it seems a bit simplistic to state that only less intelligent people enjoy social events or that intelligent folks shy away from mingling. People are complex! There are various forms of socializing that appeal to different personality types, and it’s wise not to rush to conclusions. So let’s not pat ourselves on the back too quickly just because we’re still in our pajamas at 5 p.m. on a Saturday.

These days, there’s a study for everything, followed by another study that often contradicts the previous one. The crucial takeaway is that anyone who feels validated by the latest research shouldn’t hesitate to flaunt their lifestyle while criticizing those who disagree. That’s why, as soon as I wrap this up, I’m planning to have a little chat with Lisa about tonight’s outing—because just because I’m a homebody doesn’t mean I’m smarter. Only a fool would raise their voice at their spouse. If I go down that route, I’ll be lucky to get anywhere without crutches.

In summary, while a recent study claims that homebodies may have a higher IQ, it’s essential to recognize that intelligence and social preferences are not so black and white. We all have our unique preferences, and it’s okay to enjoy both staying in and going out!
