Tales From the Home Insemination Kit: A Tribute to My Grandfather

I donned my favorite pantsuit and cast my vote today.

I voted in memory of my grandfather, a minister in the 1930s who traveled the globe not to preach, but to listen and understand different beliefs. I honored my grandmother, whose uncle tried to block her college dreams, but thanks to her father’s will, she pursued education. Although her ambitions in engineering were thwarted, she embraced math, eventually becoming a teacher and an administrator, guiding countless kids toward their passions in math and science.

I cast my vote for my mother, who earned her Ph.D. while juggling two young children, instilling in us the importance of critical thinking and standing our ground. I honored my father, who championed my mother’s education and career, ensuring no one mistook her for just his secretary. He made sure my sisters and I felt empowered, always supporting any dreams we dared to chase—even if they included aspirations of the presidency!

I voted for my husband, a first-generation immigrant (who also supports Hillary), and for my children, who represent a beautiful mix of cultures. For my daughter, who only recently found her voice against a friend’s misguided political views, and for my son, who proudly sports long hair, embracing the idea that girls are just as awesome as boys.

I voted for myself, for love, for the future, and for all of you.
