I’m backing her because I was once that chubby girl in school. I remember the hurtful words thrown my way, the laughter echoing in hallways, and the ice ball that hit me square in the face. The things said to me were shockingly similar to the trash that comes out of certain public figures. I can’t recall ever firing back; I just hoped nobody noticed. I thought if I was smarter, funnier, and kinder, maybe they wouldn’t see me as the target.
The saddest part? I internalized it all. I believed I was the fat, disgusting pig they called me. As kids, we’re taught to trust what others say, and their cruel words became my truth. Fast forward to today, and I’m blessed with a daughter who lights up my world. She deserves so much better than a man who is blatantly cruel, a misogynist, a racist, and downright ignorant. Young men need role models who are much more than someone who resorts to childish name-calling.
I stand with her because, just tonight, I asked my little girl if she aspired to be president one day. And who knows? Maybe she will be!
