Think racism is a thing of the past in America? Sure, we’ve had our share of historic moments, like electing a Black president—not once, but twice. You might believe that those days of judging individuals by their skin color are behind us, but think again.
Meet Jordan Taylor from Midland, Michigan. As a standout kicker for the Dow High School football team, which is currently sitting at 8-1 in the league, she’s making waves this season. This is Jordan’s first year on the team, where she’s taken on the role of placekicker. So far, she’s nailed an impressive 29 out of 31 extra-point attempts—more than anyone else in the league.
Jordan is also breaking boundaries as the first girl to play varsity football in her town, a feat unmatched by either Dow or their rivals, Midland. With both of her brothers having played football for the Chargers, she’s fueled by a desire to push limits and embrace new challenges. Her coach praises her, saying, “She’s the best kicker we’ve had in a long time.”
But Jordan’s achievements haven’t shielded her from the ugly side of society. Recently, during a Midland-Dow game, an Instagram user named kaylajones posted a photo with a friend in a gorilla suit, captioned, “Got a pic with Dow’s kicker ;)” While it’s uncertain if the suit was intended as a direct jab at Jordan, the timing and context are troubling. The post quickly gained a few likes before it was taken down, yet no disciplinary action has been reported.
Jordan is not just a talented athlete; she excels academically as well. With a 3.5 GPA, she’s earned a partial scholarship to Northwood University, and will also receive an academic merit award. But while she’s busy securing her future, she’s also faced with racists trying to undermine her accomplishments with outdated and offensive stereotypes.
Her teammates have embraced her as one of their own; her coach emphasizes that she’s not just “Jordan, the girl kicker,” but “Jordan, a valued team member.” She shares that she’s formed strong bonds with her teammates, many of whom she’s known since childhood, and appreciates the support from her community.
Sadly, it’s often easier for a girl to earn acceptance on an all-male football team than for a successful Black girl to dodge the harsh realities of racism. It’s a stark reminder that prejudice is still very much alive in America, lurking in small towns and cities across the country. If you need proof, just look at Jordan Taylor.

Despite her impressive achievements on the football field and in academics, she is not exempt from the prejudices that continue to exist. Her story not only highlights her strength and resilience but serves as a reminder that the fight against racism is far from over.
