In a heartwarming blend of haircuts and literacy, a barbershop in Michigan is helping kids sharpen their reading skills, one snip at a time. At The Fuller Cut, located just outside Ann Arbor, kids earn a two-dollar discount (or a cash reward) when they read aloud during their haircut. This innovative initiative, dubbed the Read to Your Barber program, was created by barber Jake Thompson, who was inspired after learning about similar programs in other states.
Teaming up with shop owner Sam Carter, Thompson collected books from home and soon the barbershop’s little library began to flourish, thanks to contributions from the community. Kids can even bring their own books to read; as long as they’re reading aloud, they’ll walk away with a little extra pocket money.
The motivation behind this initiative is beautifully summed up by a quote from the legendary Frederick Douglass: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” As kids read, the barbers not only lend an ear but also cheer them on, helping with difficult words and even quizzing them afterward to ensure they comprehend what they’ve read.
