A Tribute to the Extraordinary Men Among Us

As I lounge in bed, my partner bounds into the room, coffee in hand. He catches my eye and chuckles. “I adore that expression on your face when I bring you coffee every morning,” he says, leaning down to plant a kiss on my forehead before handing me my favorite latte.

Most of my mornings begin like this, with my wonderful partner bringing me coffee. Now, if I may indulge in a little bragging, he also handles the dishes, whips up meals, does the grocery shopping, and even mops the floors. I married a truly good man—a kind, decent, and responsible soul. He shares the load and treats me as an equal. We’ve been together for 18 years, and this is the core of who he is.

Some might say I’m fortunate, and there’s truth in that. I appreciate what I have and never take it for granted. However, my partner isn’t a rare breed. He’s not the only good, kind, and decent man I’ve encountered—not by a long shot.

Yet, society often shines a spotlight on the misguided few—the misogynistic bullies, the men who mistreat their partners, the ones who boast about assaulting women or commit heinous acts. Yes, those individuals exist in alarming numbers, but they don’t represent the majority of the men I know. And I’d wager they aren’t the majority in society either.

There are countless remarkable men whose goodness often goes unnoticed. The fathers I babysat for as a teenager who drove me home late at night without making me uneasy. The respectful guys I dated who always heeded my boundaries. My male friends and family members who proudly embrace feminism because they believe in equality.

To Honor These Men

To honor these men and all the other incredible men out there, I’d like to raise a virtual glass:

  • Here’s to the good men—the kind, decent, and hardworking souls we can always count on.
  • Here’s to the men who express their feelings and aren’t afraid to show vulnerability.
  • Here’s to the men who reject the idea that testosterone excuses poor behavior and understand that locker room talk should never demean women.
  • Here’s to the men who may not grasp the challenges of motherhood but support the mothers of their children through it all.
  • Here’s to the hands-on fathers who don’t see caring for their children as “babysitting.”
  • Here’s to the men who uplift the women in their lives, encouraging them to chase their dreams without feeling threatened by female success.
  • Here’s to those who recognize and appreciate the unique contributions women bring, advocate for female representation in all spheres, and know that striving for equality benefits everyone.
  • Here’s to the men who see that men and women are like the two wings of a bird—both must be strong for humanity to soar.
  • Here’s to the men who are appalled by the Brock Turners of the world, who are bewildered by domestic violence, and who can’t fathom using their strength to harm anyone.
  • Here’s to the men who dismiss the “boys will be boys” mentality, understanding that low standards for male behavior insult them all.
  • Here’s to the men who not only understand but also strive to enlighten others.

I know many of these men, and I bet you do too. If you don’t, it might be time to seek out some new company. Truly, good, kind, and decent men are everywhere if you just look.

So here’s to them, the fantastic men of the world. May we find them, may we know them, may we love them, and may we raise our sons to become just like them. Cheers!
