Because my grandmother, who emigrated from Portugal, faced discrimination in Florida during the Jim Crow era, constantly being asked to leave establishments due to her sun-kissed complexion.
Because my son, born with striking skin and tight, curly hair despite my husband’s fair looks and blue eyes, is often questioned by adults on why his skin tone differs from his sisters, even though they share similar facial features.
Because we need to stop categorizing each other by color; we’re all human, and I refuse to let my children grow up in a world where they’re boxed into labels for someone else’s comfort.
Because I have two fierce and beautiful daughters who are ready to make their mark and don’t need anyone’s approval to do so.
Because I’m a blue-haired, 43-year-old wife of a lifelong Republican who would rather abstain from this election (still trying to convince him to join my side) than not support me.
Because I grew up as a child of teenage parents who relied on food stamps and welfare, living in cramped quarters with outdoor bathrooms, and now I’m fortunate enough to be in the top 1%, always remembering that life’s situations don’t determine a person’s worth, ambition, or intelligence—everyone deserves a fair shot.
Because I’m hopeful that even though 90% of our friends are backing Trump (probably for tax benefits), they’ll realize in their hearts that they truly support another candidate.
Because I choose to embrace hope and love over the waves of hatred, judgment, and division.
Because I believe she can succeed (and posting this gives me a paralyzing fear of jinxing her).
I am with you.
I. Am. With. Her.
