If You Want to Cancel, I Promise I Won’t Mind

Hey there, fabulous mom friend!

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say how absolutely thrilled I am about our dinner plans tonight! Seriously, I can hardly contain my excitement. It feels like ages since we’ve had a chance to chat, and I can’t wait to catch up.

And honestly, how great is it to break free from the weekday grind? I mean, who goes out in the city on a Tuesday night? Well, apparently we do! How cool is that? This restaurant is supposed to be top-notch, and I’m so glad we snagged a reservation.

So, I just wrapped up feeding and bathing the kids and I’m about to hop in the shower myself. But you know me, I had to take a moment to reach out.

Oh, I don’t think I told you the backstory of how I ended up texting you about tonight. So, there I was, stuck in the carpool line waiting for the kids, and I decided to tune into some nostalgic ’90s tunes. You won’t believe it—Hootie was playing, and then that Spice Girls anthem we used to blast in college came on! You know the one! “Tell me what you want, what you really really want…” I was belting it out, and of course, you popped into my mind.

Then, out of nowhere, La Bouche’s “Be My Lover” hit the airwaves. Talk about a blast from the past! I was instantly flooded with memories of us dancing on tables and having a blast in those sketchy basements. Suddenly, I felt like I wasn’t old at all. Nope, I’m still a vibrant spring chicken ready to party! So, I grabbed my phone and texted you about our epic plans, and you were totally on board! Even if it morphed into just dinner, who cares? We’re making the most of a Tuesday!

However, I totally get that life is hectic, and I don’t want you to feel pressured by my wild desire to feel young again. So, if you need to bail, I promise I won’t be upset. Seriously.

In fact, if you’re considering canceling, please feel free! I wouldn’t hold it against you at all.

It’s not that I don’t want to see you—I really do! But let’s be real. It’s almost winter, which means darkness has been creeping in since 5 PM. And here we are at 6:30, and I’ve been itching to slip into my pajamas for hours. The thought of putting on nice clothes after my shower is just exhausting. My body is throwing a mini revolt like, “What are you doing, Samantha?” And let’s not even talk about how bloated I feel right now.

Plus, my husband just waltzed in, changed into sweats, and plopped down on the couch with a Vietnamese takeout menu. It’s doing nothing for my motivation to shower and get ready. I feel chilly and hungry, and honestly, showering is the last thing on my mind right now.

Oh look, you’re texting me! Please let it be a cancellation!

“Are we still on for tonight? Can’t wait to catch up!” Oh no. Is that my chance to dodge? Why can’t you just cancel on your own? Why does it have to be me?

“I’m good if you are. Just let me know.” I didn’t even use an exclamation point, so she can’t be sure if I’m excited or not. Now our plans feel way too uncertain. Fine, I’ll hop in the shower and hope that by the time I get out, she’ll suggest another night. Fingers crossed!

“I’m good. See you soon!” Ugh, whyyyyy?

I feel like I’m channeling Cameron from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, stuck in a panic. Who really wants to trek into the city on a Tuesday evening, especially with winter nipping at our heels? Can’t she see that it’s the thought that matters? Texting her was my way of saying I’m still thinking of her. It’s the idea of making fabulous plans that makes us feel trendy—not necessarily the actual execution. Why did I even suggest this?

Oh, right. It was my idea!

So just wanted to say I’m really looking forward to seeing you! But maybe next time we get that itch to relive our wild days, let’s plan for lunch instead?
