When you find out you’re expecting, it quickly dawns on you that the universe doesn’t pause for your pregnancy. While you’re contentedly sipping on water, juice, or mocktails that would taste infinitely better with a splash of vodka, your friends are out there partying, tying the knot, or enjoying a casual evening with a nice bottle of red. How rude, right? But hey, just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to hibernate. You’ll still get invites to events, dinners, and social gatherings. However, some occasions are more enjoyable when you’re not sipping on a mocktail. Here are the top offenders:
- Concerts. I’ve endured five concerts while pregnant: the cast of Nashville, Tegan & Sara, Carrie Underwood, Ed Sheeran, and Lollapalooza. Each was a different experience, and let me tell you, the vibe changes when you’re sober. You don’t necessarily need to be tipsy to enjoy live music—except for Lolla. Trust me, you might want something stronger for that one.
- Football Season/Tailgating. Fall is my jam. College football Saturdays and Sunday Funday? Yes, please! I love day drinking (who doesn’t enjoy being buzzed by 5 PM?). But when the leaves turn, and tailgating kicks off, I feel the sting of sobriety more than ever. The other day, the weather was perfect, and I found myself craving a drink more than ever while surrounded by packed bars celebrating the season.
- Bachelorette Parties. I was invited to a bachelorette bash in Vegas while pregnant, but I had to decline. Honestly, how could anyone enjoy Vegas without the ability to drink? I did attend a local party, opting out of the bar crawl but joining for dinner. It was fine, but being the sober one in a room full of tipsy friends can be less than thrilling. I also hosted my sister’s bachelorette party, which involved winery tours and bar hopping. Let’s just say, it was tolerable, especially for the people-watching opportunities.
- Weddings. I’ve managed to attend three weddings while expecting, with another on the horizon. The enjoyment level at these events often hinges on the hosts and fellow guests. Thankfully, my friends know how to throw a good party, and I’ve had a blast at each wedding—sober! Plus, wedding food is a pregnant woman’s dream. I’m more likely to appreciate the gourmet dessert when I’m not getting tipsy and forgetting to eat. But let’s be real: dancing sober can be a nightmare. I’m a terrible dancer and when I’m sober, I’m painfully aware of that!
- Vacations. How much fun you have while sober really depends on where you go. For instance, I visited Puerto Rico and found it disappointing not to sip cocktails by the pool. However, in New York for our babymoon, we focused more on the culinary scene rather than the bar scene, which turned out okay. But still, vacations feel like they should come with cocktails!
- Holidays. Holidays are about celebrating, and what’s a celebration without something bubbly in hand? Family gatherings can be tough to navigate sober, especially during holidays like the Fourth of July and Halloween. I’m expecting to be pregnant during Thanksgiving, and I can only hope to welcome Christmas with a baby in one hand and a drink in the other. After all, what’s your excuse for calling Aunt Sally out when she comments on your pregnancy weight without the help of a little liquid courage?
In conclusion, being pregnant and sober can feel like a rollercoaster of social challenges. Yet, even amid the struggles, there are still moments to enjoy—especially when you keep your focus on good food and the entertaining antics of others.
