Free dance lessons are bringing smiles to children in hospitals across California, thanks to the nonprofit organization Dancin Power. Founded in 2006, this heartwarming initiative recently gained viral fame after a touching video showcased their incredible work.

Dancin Power doesn’t let the challenges faced by their young students get in the way of having a good time. Their classes are tailored to accommodate a range of emotional and physical needs, all aimed at boosting spirits through the art of dance. Whether it’s hip-hop, Hula, or traditional Brazilian rhythms, these talented instructors find a way to get the kids moving and grooving, proving that laughter and joy can thrive even in tough times.

Vera Thompson, the organization’s founder and president, shared insights into their mission. “We often work with children undergoing chemotherapy who are in isolated areas due to low immunity,” Thompson explained. “In those circumstances, our Dancin Power teachers wear masks, gowns, and gloves to ensure we can still bring the joy of dance right to their bedside.”

Thompson emphasized the importance of involving the entire family, stating, “When a child is sick, it affects the whole family. We encourage participation from parents, siblings, and sometimes even doctors and nurses to foster a supportive community.” And it looks like their approach is paying off. “They’re laughing, learning, and enjoying themselves together!”

The benefits extend beyond just the children. Dr. Maxine Lee from the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital noted how effective these lessons can be, especially for kids recovering from serious injuries. “Getting them out of bed and into a wheelchair for Dancin Power sessions helps prevent muscle deterioration from immobility,” she explained. “It lifts their mood and boosts their confidence, giving them a sense of control during a time when they often feel powerless.”

Who can argue against the uplifting power of dance? I might not be the best dancer myself, but when my daughter drags me into one of her dance parties, it’s impossible not to have a blast. Why should sick kids miss out on the sheer joy of dancing? Hats off to Dancin Power for ensuring they get their chance to cut loose too.

And let’s be honest—some of these little dancers could probably outshine me any day!
