The Wonders of Sibling Affection

When I was expecting my second son, I was plagued with worries about my first. Would there be enough affection to go around? Would my firstborn feel neglected as I juggled my time? Had we made the right choice in expanding our family?

However, when his brother finally arrived, my eldest son — just 3 at the time — was eager to hold him. We gently placed the newborn in his lap, and I held my breath in nervous anticipation. He carefully counted the tiny pink toes and then whispered, “Do you want some of my candy?” Now, considering toddlers are hardly known for their generosity, I started to breathe a little easier, hoping this was the start of a wonderful sibling bond.

Now, fast forward: they’re 11 and 8, and with two more brothers added to the mix over the years, squabbles have become a way of life. Like typical boys, they wrestle and hit, puffing and grunting like warriors. Yet, ten minutes later, you can find them curled up on the couch, a tangle of limbs — a head on a brother’s shoulder, legs draped over one another — reminding me of how twins snuggle in the womb. Though they each have their own beds, they often choose to pile onto a single twin mattress, with limbs hanging off the sides and noses barely inches apart. Still, let one brother encroach even a millimeter into the other’s territory — whether in the car or at the dinner table — and it’s on. Go figure.

They mercilessly tease each other about crushes and funny mispronunciations, but let an outsider poke fun, and they transform into a protective unit. They’re allowed to poke at each other’s insecurities, after all; it’s part of the sibling job description! But heaven help anyone else who dares to cross that line. In this regard, “You are your brother’s keeper” rings especially true, as they stand up for one another with heartwarming loyalty. Even the shyest of the bunch will rise to the occasion when it comes to defending his brothers.

Their love for each other is truly something to behold. It’s one brother saving up his allowance for weeks, only to splurge on a surprise gift for his sibling because “he’s going to love this, Mom.” It’s the other one getting upset when he sees his brother in trouble. It’s sharing a precious snack, gifting a favorite Pokémon card, or helping with homework struggles, all while riding bikes at a slower pace so the littlest can keep up. This happens even after they’ve just called each other annoying or hurled dramatic phrases like, “I wish you were never born!”

I could go on for pages about the nuances of brotherly love, but a particular moment between my two oldest boys encapsulates it perfectly. One morning, they were lounging on the couch, and I overheard my toddler say to his big brother with genuine admiration, “Liam, I love you so much.” My heart melted, and I quietly watched from a distance.

“I love you more, Mason,” replied my kindergartner sweetly. (At this point, I was practically puddling on the floor.)

“No, I love you more,” Mason countered.

“I love you more, more, more,” Liam shot back, starting to sound a bit competitive.

“Noooo,” Mason replied, getting worked up. “I love you more more more more more!”

Liam wasn’t backing down: “I love you more more more more more mooooore!”

Before I knew it, Mason was bright red and shrieking, “NO LIAM! I LOVE YOU MORE!” and I had to intervene because it escalated into a full-blown squabble, all over who loved whom more. Oh, the irony!

Brothers oscillate between being the most infuriating adversaries and the most loyal allies. They’re built-in partners in crime, and occasionally, opponents in the ring. They are each other’s first best friends, imparting essential lessons about love, loyalty, empathy, and compromise. If you’ve ever witnessed their bond, you’ll recognize just how profound and unbreakable it is… even when there’s a bit of chaos involved.
