If you’re in a relationship with me—and my quirky friend, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)—here’s what you can expect:
-
Repetitive Questions Galore
I have a penchant for asking the same questions over and over. It’s not that I didn’t hear you the first time; I just need reassurance that I understood you correctly. -
Phobias That Make You Go Hmmm
From fear of car crashes to the possibility of a home invasion, my anxiety amplifies all of it. If it’s something that can go wrong, there’s a good chance I’m worried about it. -
Surprise Panic Attacks
Panic attacks can strike without warning. The room spins, my heart races, and sometimes, I even feel nauseous. I’ve learned to cope with them, but they still take a toll on me. -
Food Phobias, Too
I approach meals with caution. My anxiety makes me question everything—what if the food is bad? What if it’s something I’m allergic to? Eating isn’t just a meal; it’s a calculated risk. -
Obsessive Hand-Washing
I wash my hands under specific conditions. If I skip a wash or don’t do it long enough, it can send me spiraling into anxiety, possibly triggering a panic attack. -
Second-Guessing Everything
I often doubt my decisions, constantly replaying past mistakes in my head. This lowers my confidence and makes future choices feel daunting. -
Reassurance Needed
When anxiety hits, hearing “It’s going to be okay” is like a warm hug. I need to know my fears are acknowledged and that I have someone steady on my side. -
Apologies on Repeat
I frequently find myself saying “I’m sorry.” I wish I could be more carefree and easygoing, but that’s just not in my wiring.
I know my quirks can be tough to grasp. Honestly, I sometimes struggle to understand myself, too! What I truly need are people who don’t feel the need to dissect my behavior but who will love me as I am. My path may be challenging, but I’d rather have those who accept my idiosyncrasies than those who try to change me.

In summary, living with OCD means embracing a unique set of challenges. It’s essential to have people in my life who accept me wholeheartedly, quirks and all.
