Last Thursday was one of those days. My house looked like a tornado hit it, the kids were loud and unruly, my partner was grumpy, and I was completely wiped out, on the verge of tears. So, I did what any mom would do in a situation like this — I called my go-to mom friend, unloaded all my frustrations, and yes, indulged in some wine. By the time I hung up, my sides hurt from laughter and I felt like a million bucks because someone I adore took the time to make sure I was okay.
Finding a friend like this is as rare as scoring last-minute tickets to a sold-out concert, but when you find her, you’ll instantly recognize her by these unmistakable traits:
- She’s the one who’ll discreetly let you know if you have lipstick on your teeth, a little something stuck in your nose, or if those skinny jeans are doing you any favors. Simply put, she’s your go-to for avoiding public embarrassment.
- You can show her anything, from an odd rash to those surprise hairs that appeared overnight, and she won’t bat an eye. In fact, she might just pull up her sleeves and show you her own “battle scars” or help you look up remedies.
- She gets that box wine, coffee, yoga pants, and chocolate aren’t just clichés; they’re essential lifelines. And she’ll gladly show up at your doorstep with these treasures when you need a pick-me-up.
- If your child is throwing a tantrum, she won’t sugarcoat it. She’ll tell you straight up. Plus, she respects your rules about discipline and won’t overstep her boundaries.
- She knows your significant other is off-limits and treats that knowledge with the utmost respect.
- She’s the Thelma to your Louise, always ready to suggest a day of mimosas, binge-watching cooking shows, and ordering takeout.
- Need someone to hold your hair back? She’s there. Need a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on? You can count on her. She embodies unconditional love.
- She never second-guesses your parenting skills unless, of course, an intervention is truly necessary. Whether it’s breastfeeding in public or letting your child get their ears pierced, she’s your biggest supporter.
- When the judgmental stares come your way for your parenting choices — because let’s face it, they will — she stands ready to defend you, listen, and back you up.
- When life throws curveballs, like job loss or family illness, your best mom friend will be right there, likely with a casserole in hand, ready to help however she can. That’s what love looks like — just showing up.
This kind of friendship doesn’t require daily check-ins or constant support; it’s about two people who truly understand each other and stand by one another through life’s ups and downs. Kind of like a marriage, only better.
It’s my turn to return the favor to my BFF. I think I’ll stop by a bakery and surprise her with some treats later.
