Can We Have a Moment to Discuss Something?

It seems like there’s been quite a bit of commotion coming from your side lately—well, more like for the past year. We understand there’s an election happening right now, and as it draws near, things tend to get a bit louder. Usually, we don’t mind the noise; in fact, we often enjoy keeping up with the happenings. We just had our own election recently—maybe you caught wind of it? Just kidding, we know you probably didn’t.

You might have seen our new Prime Minister, though? He’s a lot like your former President; a vocal advocate for women’s rights, has a great sense of humor, and even enjoys surfing. He’s been known to unintentionally photobomb weddings while on vacation! Plus, he bases his policies on facts—who would’ve thought that would be a rarity?

Leadership Matters

This brings us to a topic we want to discuss: leadership. You might not have much interest in our Prime Minister, and that’s perfectly fine; it’s not your country. After all, we don’t go around calling ourselves the Leaders of the Free World. But you do, and what happens in your country has a significant impact on the globe. Typically, this isn’t a major concern. We Canadians lean more progressive, so we naturally supported your former President. Honestly, we wouldn’t have been too upset about President McCain or President Romney.

However, there’s a candidate from one of your political parties who genuinely frightens us and makes us question whether there’s a future on this spinning rock we call home. And it’s not just us—other countries are feeling uneasy about your election as well. There’s chatter in Eastern Europe about your commitment to longstanding alliances, which some perceive as more of a protection racket. In Japan, they’re getting nervous because this same candidate has hinted at abandoning them with some nuclear arms and calling it a day. Just recently, he referred to the Philippines as a “terrorist nation,” and we’re still scratching our heads over that one.

We’ve heard that this candidate doesn’t quite grasp why nuclear weapons shouldn’t be the go-to solution for every problem, and that’s concerning for us. We watch our children playing outside, growing, and becoming adults, and we don’t envision a future where they inherit a desolate, irradiated world.

Aside from his alarming lack of understanding regarding nuclear weapons, your candidate seems to overlook that there are eight other nations with nuclear capabilities, some of which can be quite unpredictable—especially when an American presidential hopeful is cozying up to the neighborhood bully and threatening trade wars with major nuclear powers.

A Hope for Better Leadership

So, America, we feel close enough to be honest with you, and we know you can do better. We hope.

Sincerely, Your Caring Neighbors Up North.
