An Ode to the Mom Who Just Sits There During a Tantrum

You won’t always nail this parenting gig, and that’s perfectly alright.

Before I had kids, I envisioned myself as the ultimate mom. The kind who effortlessly managed everything, never faltering. I would peek at other mothers with unruly toddlers and smirk, convinced I’d never be in that position. Funny how karma works—when you’re a bit too self-assured, life has a way of humbling you.

Then reality hit. Suddenly, I found myself as the mom of a child having a full-blown meltdown in the cereal aisle. And let’s face it, sometimes you just can’t muster the energy to deal with it. And you know what? Just surviving those moments with your sanity somewhat intact is a victory.

You won’t always have the right answers or a perfectly behaved child, and that’s totally okay.

Recently, my friend Jenna shared her experience witnessing a mom at a café whose kid was in the middle of a major tantrum, and the mom was simply sitting there. Jenna remarked, “I have been that mom. I’ve pleaded, bribed, and carried my child out kicking and screaming. I’ve comforted them and reminded them I love them, even while feeling like I might lose it myself. But sometimes, I just sat there and did nothing.”

As parents, we all have those days when we hit a wall. Sometimes, all you can do is sit next to your screaming child, take a few deep breaths, and remind yourself that you’re human. And that’s okay too.

Next time, you might have some tricks up your sleeve to handle the situation like a champ… or maybe not. Just remember, tantrums are a universal experience, and sometimes you just have to breathe and let it pass. As Jenna wisely said, “Being present and doing nothing are two completely different things.”

In summary, remember that every parent has been there. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, and sometimes the best approach is simply to be present. So, take a deep breath and embrace the chaos—you’re doing just fine.
