Enough is Enough: A Call to Action on Gun Violence

Dear America, it’s time to wake up.

As I sit here at my desk after another school day, I find myself scrolling through news headlines that report yet another school shooting. Each incident makes me question whether my students, my school, and my colleagues are next. It’s simply too much.

Let’s stop perpetuating the tired and misleading mantras like “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” or “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” These phrases are not only outdated but contribute to the ongoing epidemic of gun violence in our nation. The data speaks for itself—countries with stricter gun control laws don’t face the same rates of gun-related deaths as we do. It’s time to stop the spin and face reality: we need to eliminate guns from our society.

We don’t need more firearms; we don’t need them at all. Go ahead, disagree with me, but if you believe that the right to bear arms is more important than a child’s right to live, then you are operating from a place of ignorance and fear. How can a right to own a weapon outweigh the right of a child to be safe?

I am scared. I worry about walking into my school one day and having to lock my students in the classroom while we huddle in fear, not knowing what is happening outside. I dread the thought of having to choose between my safety and that of my students. I fear for my daughter’s safety when she starts school this fall, wondering if she’ll be safe in what should be a nurturing environment.

It terrifies me that some people prioritize their misguided “right” to own a gun over the countless lives lost to gun violence day after day. We have become so selfish as a society that we allow our children’s safety to be compromised for the sake of owning weapons designed solely to inflict harm.

I am scared. And enough is enough. We cannot afford to lose one more life to gun violence. Guns simply aren’t worth lives.
