“Hey, Emma! Long time no see! How have you been?” I exclaimed, spotting my friend at the pool.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Not so fast, little man. Sunscreen first!” she replied, her eyes darting to her son.
“Sorry! It’s been ages since we caught up. How are the kids?” I continued, trying to keep the conversation going amidst the chaos.
“Stop squirming! I’ll get the sunscreen in your eyes if you don’t hold still!” she shouted, barely able to contain the wild energy around her.
“Did they have a good school year?” I asked, dodging a rogue splash from her youngest.
“No! You are NOT going to the baby pool without a floatie!” she warned her son, who seemed oblivious to the impending danger.
“Right, so how was the year?” I tried again, only to be interrupted.
“No snacks yet! We just got here!” she shouted, her voice tinged with exasperation.
“Wonderful to hear you’re all doing well! Any plans for the summer?” I pressed on, while keeping an eye on my own kids.
“Don’t splash your brother like that! Nobody wants to hear him cry!” she barked, her patience wearing thin.
“Beach trip sounds amazing!” I said, feeling a wave of nostalgia. “We’re planning to hit the beach too, but—oh no! The baby!”
“Hang on! I forgot sunscreen on him. Sorry, buddy, but this is for your own good!” I apologized to my squirming toddler, who was not a fan of the sticky lotion.
“Phew! Back to your toys! Anyway, we’re excited to get to the beach, but—oh, great!” My heart sank as I caught a whiff of something foul.
“Seriously?! Why couldn’t you have waited just ten minutes? Kids, out of the pool! Everyone into the locker room. Yes, it’s mandatory! Do you want a snack later? I thought so. Now move it!”
After a deep breath, I gathered my crew. “Anyone need to use the bathroom before we dive back in?”
“Good! Back to the beach vibes, where we can finally relax!” I hoped, but was quickly interrupted.
“STOP squirting the lifeguard right now! Apologize—NOW!” she commanded, her face a mix of disbelief and exhaustion.
“Will we ever be those moms who can just lay back and soak up the sun? Oh no! Where’s my middle one? I can see the oldest and the youngest, but where’s he?”
“Phew, there you are! Stay away from the snack bar! You nearly gave me a heart attack!”
“Do you think we’ll ever get to read a magazine in peace?” I mused, only to be met with more chaos.
“Baby down! Don’t cry! You just got a little water in your mouth!” she soothed, but I could see the struggle in her eyes.
“Maybe sunbathing is just a distant dream,” I sighed, as her son squirted the lifeguard for the second time.
“Timeout! Get in the chair now!” she ordered, her voice firm.
“Seriously, why do you seem so calm? Is it just me? Am I the only one who’s completely neurotic?” I chuckled, realizing how crazy our lives had become.
“Okay, you can get out of timeout, but don’t even think about squirting anyone again!” she warned, clearly at her wit’s end.
“Wouldn’t a drink be nice right now? Maybe I’ll just skip it and grab a shot instead,” I joked, only to be met with her firm response.
“No, ice cream is NOT a snack! Snack is chips or pretzels!” she shot back, enforcing the rules.
“Sometimes I think people imagine we just lounge by the pool all day,” I said, glancing around at the other parents.
“Did you see where Emma went? Great, now my friend is gone! Can’t you just sit and play nicely?! Is that too much to ask?” she exclaimed, her voice tinged with desperation.
