I’m THAT Mom at the Game

If you’ve ever crossed paths with me, “soccer mom” is probably not the first label that comes to mind. With my background in art school and a penchant for all things nerdy, many would describe me as more of a homesteader or a free-spirited mom. But ever since my child signed up for our local fall sports league, I’ve embraced my new identity as a proud soccer mom.

Every Saturday morning, I haul my family over to the town rec center to cheer on my oldest as they learn the ropes of dribbling and kicking. Around me, a variety of moms are doing their own thing. There’s the one quietly scrolling through social media, the volunteer coach passionately directing the kids (sometimes ruffling feathers), and the PTA mom chatting with her circle.

And then there’s me.

I’m the mom who cheers enthusiastically for every child on the field, not just my own. These little ones, ranging from kindergarten to second grade, are just starting to figure out friendships, how to tie their shoes, and that the big net is a goal—not a secret hideout, as some boys were convinced of last week.

I’m also the mom who gets excited about bringing fun snacks for the team, even if it’s not required (which might annoy a few). My backpack is filled with treats, Band-Aids, extra water, baby wipes, and sunscreen. No one ever asks for these, but I prefer to be prepared.

I’m the mom who enjoys mingling with the other parents (even the quieter ones), genuinely wanting to connect with those who share the field with my child. It’s in my nurturing nature to be curious, so why not seize the chance to get to know them?

I won’t hesitate to stand up against overly loud parents who bicker at the coaches. Let’s be real: these coaches are volunteers, and these kids are too young and inexperienced for anyone to be making a fuss about how things are run. Seriously, calm down.

I’m also the mom who firmly tells enthusiastic coaches—who think pee wee soccer is a mini-pro league—where they can stick their whistle. The overzealous parents who think their little stars deserve extra time with the ball are just as tiresome as the coaches who take it too seriously. It’s just a game!

I’m the mom who rallies around a child who misses a goal and is visibly upset. These kids are learning, and they all deserve cheers for their efforts—no, I’m not advocating for participation trophies, but we can agree that supporting all kids is important, right? Their teamwork and spirit matter.

I’m the mom reminding my own child (and likely yours too) to ease up when they start teasing others about skills or gear. This group is learning to be part of a team and to show good sportsmanship. Friendly competition is fine, but being a brat is not.

So there you have it: I’m a proud soccer mom who loves the game and all the kids involved—yours included! You’ll find me on the sidelines chatting with fellow moms, cheering for both teams, and upholding the idea that sports can teach our kids to be respectful, responsible individuals who learn to believe in themselves as much as we believe in them. In summary, I’m a soccer mom who embraces the chaos of youth sports, supports my child and their friends, and believes in fostering a positive environment for everyone involved.
