Experts warn of bacteria and behavioral issues that can arise from letting your dog lick your child’s mouth.

There’s nothing quite as adorable as watching a dog and a baby interact, which is likely why many of us let our furry friends shower our kids with slobbery kisses. However, pet specialists and pediatricians have a strong warning: it’s best to keep your dog’s tongue away from your child’s mouth.

“While we often consider our pets as family, it’s crucial to maintain boundaries,” says Dr. Emily Carter, a pediatrician. When dogs lick humans, it can create a false sense of dominance, leading to unpredictable behaviors. “This can result in the dog becoming overly protective of the adults and even reacting aggressively if they perceive a threat to their owners,” she explains.

Many of us have experienced moments where a dog barks or rushes towards someone during play, believing it’s in a protective role. Dr. Carter emphasizes that it’s essential for families to train dogs to respect the space of children. “Given that both dogs and kids can be unpredictable, establishing a licking relationship is not advisable,” she warns.

Additionally, hygiene is a significant concern when dogs and children share kisses. “With the rise of raw diets for dogs, such as raw chicken, there’s an increased risk of salmonella,” cautions Dr. Mike Johnson, a veterinarian from New Jersey. If a dog licks a child’s mouth, that child could be at risk of infection too.

Dogs use their mouths for many things, and as Dr. Sara Lee noted, “Their tongues can serve as their version of toilet paper.” This means kids might be exposed to various germs, some of which can lead to mouth infections or more serious systemic conditions. Both Dr. Carter and Dr. Lee recommend parents train their dogs to respect all family members, including kids. “When your dog wants to give kisses, redirect that affection to your hand and wash it thoroughly afterward,” Dr. Lee advises.

In summary, while it’s delightful to see dogs and kids together, it’s essential to establish boundaries to ensure safety and hygiene. Training your dog to respect your child’s space can help prevent behavioral issues and health risks associated with dog kisses.
