In August, photographer Lily Thompson was contacted by excited father Mark Anderson. He and his wife Sarah had previously taken maternity photos during her first pregnancy, but unfortunately, the photographer never delivered the promised images. Following that, the couple faced the heart-wrenching experience of six pregnancy losses while trying for a second child.
When Sarah became pregnant again, Mark was determined to fulfill his wife’s desire for a beautiful maternity shoot. He reached out to Lily to help make that dream a reality. “Sarah wanted something that symbolized hope and new beginnings, particularly a rainbow theme, given their long journey with fertility challenges,” Lily shared with Home Insemination Kit. “I envisioned creating our own rainbow using colorful smoke bombs to add a magical touch to their session.” To bring this vision to life, Lily teamed up with fellow photographer Emma Brown from Creative Moments Photography. “Having collaborated with her before, I knew we would create something truly special,” Lily added. “I was a bit anxious about handling the smoke bombs, but Emma was her usual calm self, ready for anything.”
The result was absolutely breathtaking:
“Each smoke bomb was activated one by one, and with every burst of color, the portrait unfolded beautifully in front of my camera,” Lily explained. “It felt like we were shooting a candy commercial, but even sweeter — every moment was incredibly rewarding. Through the colorful haze, Sarah radiated grace, and her pregnancy glow shone like sunlight.” Lily even shared some behind-the-scenes shots on her Facebook page, Capturing Joy.
Experiencing six pregnancy losses can be an overwhelming emotional journey. This couple created a lovely moment for themselves, reminding us to pause and appreciate the strength it takes to overcome such heartbreaking experiences. This image truly represents the rainbow after the storm.
“Six little ones lost to earn the privilege of carrying this rainbow baby,” Sarah expressed. “I hope my story resonates with others, letting them know they are not alone in the often dark and isolating journey of loss and infertility.”
