Lucas Green, a talented artist and dedicated dad, has been nurturing his children’s creative sides for years. Their latest venture, dubbed “Rock Around,” was designed for an upcoming ArtPrize competition, and it truly elevated their artistic pursuits. “This time, we went all out! In previous projects, we painted around 40 items, but for ArtPrize, we dedicated an entire year to painting over 1,000 rocks,” Lucas shared. “Each rock has its own unique character.”
After gathering more than 1,000 stones, Lucas initially painted them in one of seven base colors, allowing his children to unleash their imaginations by decorating each one with their chosen designs. Each rock is part of a matching pair. “I displayed 500 of the rocks outside the local Children’s Museum, creating a vibrant mosaic of colors and shapes, while the other 500 rocks were cleverly hidden throughout Grand Rapids,” Lucas explained.

Once the rocks were hidden, families in Grand Rapids took to their neighborhoods for an exciting round of “I Spy,” competing to see who could find the most hidden treasures. Participants were encouraged to share their discoveries on social media using the hashtag #RockAroundGR. Lucas noted that one of the highlights was seeing the joy on families’ faces as they uncovered the playful game waiting for them.
