8 Reasons Why Summer Detox is Truly a Thing

This summer, my kids discovered the joys of sleeping in. This was a delightful shift that I welcomed wholeheartedly. They woke up cheerful and well-rested, and I did too. It turns out that happy, well-rested kids are more pleasant, play better together, and, best of all, leave me with some much-needed peace and quiet. As a mom working from home, it was a dream come true. I managed to write every day, and life was fabulous—until early August rolled around, and I had a sudden realization.

School was just around the corner—bringing with it strict schedules, early mornings, and gulp homework.

So, I must take a moment to sincerely apologize to someone very dear to me: Summer, I retract every unkind remark I’ve ever made about you. You are a magnificent season with your late mornings, lazy days, and spontaneous trips to the pool. I sincerely apologize for criticizing your lack of structure and carefree attitude. I’m truly sorry for our misunderstandings. Please forgive me.

Here’s why the concept of summer detox has been so real in my household:

  1. Sudden Transition to School Schedules. It’s not a gradual shift back to school. One moment, we’re enjoying pool days, and the next, we’re thrown into Back-to-School Night and the chaos of school activities. It’s exhausting, especially when I haven’t worn real shoes in weeks.
  2. Goodbye to Sleeping In. Did I mention my kids started sleeping in? I’d been waiting for this moment for a decade—literally ten years!
  3. Forgotten Morning Routines. My son stands in a daze every morning, bewildered that the day starts so early. When I say, “Maybe it’s time for socks, buddy?” he looks at me as though I’m speaking another language—he hasn’t heard the word “socks” in months.
  4. Overwhelmed by Clothing. Now they have to wear real clothes, including pants and possibly a jacket, and it’s just too much fabric for them to handle.
  5. Lists on Top of Lists. There’s clothes shopping, school supplies, haircuts, snacks, lunch ingredients, new backpacks, and coats—oh my! Suddenly, budgeting for food feels impossible.
  6. No More Lazy Afternoons. It’s all about soccer, dance classes, homework, and washing those endless piles of clothing they suddenly need.
  7. End of Movie Nights. We can no longer stay up late on the couch watching movies because we have to wake up early and get our kids to school to be “responsible parents.”
  8. Cranky Family Members. Let’s be honest: we’re not great with change. We pretend to be excited, but deep down, we’d rather hide under the covers and hope everything will revert to the way it was. So, we end up a bit cranky. Sorry, world.

To all families posing for back-to-school photos with forced smiles while secretly mourning the loss of summer, I feel you. Let’s just hope our kids remember those glorious lazy mornings when Christmas break comes around.
