The Parenting Partnership Agreement

Dear fellow parents with whom I share regular family interactions,

I’ve realized that our parenting journeys are much smoother when we collaborate and present a united front, especially around our kids. While it’s important for our little ones to understand that different families have different approaches, parenting is already a challenge, so why not make it easier for ourselves when we’re together?

With that in mind, it’s essential that we support each other for our collective sanity and well-being. Therefore, I, your dedicated co-parent in the trenches, wholeheartedly commit to the following agreements:

  1. When we’re at a gathering with our children, I’ll check with you to coordinate our departure time. This way, we can avoid the dreaded “Why are we always the first to leave?” scenario.
  2. If we’re dining out together, I’ll touch base with you beforehand regarding whether the kids will have soda or water, helping us avoid the chaotic “Friends with Soda Apocalypse.”
  3. When I have treats like candy or ice cream to share with your child, I’ll discreetly check in with you first to ensure it’s okay before handing it over. I’d appreciate you doing the same for me!
  4. For dessert time, if our kids come running to ask for seconds, we’ll exchange one of two looks: one saying “no way” and the other saying “why not, they’re already hyped!” Once we’ve silently agreed, we’ll respond in unison.
  5. I promise not to give in to my child’s tantrum in front of yours, knowing it might inspire a similar outburst from them. I trust you’ll do the same.
  6. We both agree that sleepover requests from our kids require at least 24 hours’ notice for consideration, with a decision made after our discreet discussion.
  7. When you’re not around, I’ll gently remind your kids to use their words, show good manners, and practice habits of cleanliness. I hope you’ll do the same for mine.
  8. If your child is acting out when you’re not there, I’ll let you know. Please feel free to do the same regarding my kids.
  9. If either of us forgets or overlooks something in this agreement, I promise not to judge or criticize, because parenting is tough, right?

In conclusion, I’m committed to making our time together as families easier, and I hope for your support in return. We need to band together to navigate this parenting adventure. I’ll help you out, and you help me, deal?

Cheers,
Your Fellow Exhausted Parent
