London is undoubtedly one of my favorite cities in Europe. Before becoming a parent, I had the pleasure of visiting this vibrant city multiple times. Experiencing London with my son was an adventure like no other, especially with my sister living there and her young child providing the ultimate insider tips for family-friendly fun. Here are some of our top recommendations for exploring London with kids!
1. Getting Around
As a New Yorker, I’m accustomed to a bustling public transit system, but London’s transport options are a game-changer for families. Unlike NYC, where you often have to fold strollers on buses and subways, London’s iconic black cabs allow you to keep your stroller unfolded. Plus, the double-decker buses are a hit with kids! They’ll love riding up top, taking in the sights as you traverse the city. Just hop on any double-decker for a fun experience!
2. Shopping at Marks & Spencer
This store is a treasure trove. From trendy clothing to delicious food, affordable home goods, and even beauty products, you can find it all here. It’s the UK equivalent of American chains like Duane Reade or Walgreens. Don’t miss Boots, a go-to for everything from snacks to toiletries scattered throughout London.
3. Battersea Park Children’s Zoo
We fell in love with this charming zoo during our first visit and returned again within the same week! Even though our latest trip only allowed for one visit, it didn’t disappoint. With an incredible variety of animals, including donkeys, ferrets, and African Grey Parrots, plus a fantastic play area for kids, there’s plenty to keep them entertained. And don’t forget to stop by the on-site café for a quick bite!
4. London Walks
For a unique way to explore, consider joining one of the many London Walks. While younger children might not enjoy the full two-hour tour, older kids will love the Harry Potter on Location walk, where they can immerse themselves in the magical world of their favorite wizard.
5. Visit Harrods
Known worldwide, Harrods is more than just a shopping destination—it’s an experience. Take your family and treat it like a museum visit! The stunning displays and decorations will leave your children in awe, and there are plenty of dining options if you get hungry while exploring.
6. The Royal Mews
After snapping photos outside Buckingham Palace, take a short stroll to the Royal Mews. Here, you’ll discover a fascinating collection of royal carriages, horses, and even the iconic Rolls Royce Phantom VI! Kids can enjoy an interactive area where they can engage in creative activities like dressing a coachman.
7. National Army Museum
This museum offers an incredible Kids’ Zone that will keep your little ones entertained for hours. My son and his cousin visited twice, constantly engaged with hands-on exhibits that allowed them to learn through play.
8. London Eye and Westminster
Don’t miss out on the London Eye, one of the world’s largest Ferris wheels. The 30-minute ride offers breathtaking views of the city. Afterward, take a leisurely walk to see Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. It’s a fantastic way to experience some of London’s most iconic landmarks!
9. Byron Burgers
When cravings hit for a classic burger and fries, Byron is the place to go. They also offer a fantastic vegetarian burger that even non-vegetarians rave about!
10. The British Museum
This museum is filled with priceless artifacts and art. Initially, we visited for their Children’s Audio Guide, but we found something even better—interactive Hands-On areas. These spots allow kids to engage directly with history, making it a memorable experience for all ages.
Visiting London with children is a delightful experience, but remember to take it easy. Jet lag can be tough on everyone, so don’t feel pressured to cram in every sight. Instead, enjoy the moments you share together, and leave a few attractions for your next trip. After all, having something left unseen is the perfect excuse to return!
