This weekend, something more elusive than a full night’s sleep with a toddler happened—I escaped with seven of my closest friends for a long-overdue moms’ getaway. Admittedly, “away” was just a short 15-minute drive to a downtown hotel, but it was still a much-needed break.
Since entering the world of motherhood 18 months ago, I’ve built a tight-knit group of mom friends. These incredible women have become my support system during those challenging moments filled with teething, tantrums, and sleepless nights. They offer advice, encouragement, and the reassurance I need when I feel like I’m fumbling through parenting.
Being a stay-at-home mom can be isolating at times, which is why having a tribe of other moms is essential. They don’t judge my nightly glass of wine or my penchant for binge-watching reality TV. Whether I let my child cry it out after a long day or feed her a diet of cheese and bananas, they’re always there to remind me it’s all part of the journey. We meet almost weekly, but it’s rare for any of us to spend a night away from our little ones—let alone a weekend.
After months of planning, we finally made it happen, and to my surprise, everyone was able to join for at least one night.
You might be expecting this to unfold like a scene from a wild movie, with us partying hard and indulging in cocktails with names that would make our kids giggle. While that’s a fun image, the reality was even better than I could have hoped for. I discovered that even though I see these women regularly, a weekend getaway reveals unique sides of each mom. Here’s what I learned about the different types of moms you might meet:
1. The Apocalypse-Ready Mom
This mom comes prepared for anything, packing enough supplies to survive a month-long trip. From first-aid kits to snacks fit for a sports team, she’s got it all. Traveling with her is a blessing since she ensures you’re covered for any unexpected scenarios.
2. The Minimalist Mom
She arrives with just the essentials crammed into her purse, likely forgetting something crucial. Her small overnight bag indicates a last-minute packing frenzy, but luckily, the Apocalypse-Ready Mom is there to save the day.
3. The Mom Who Can’t Switch Off
This mom is perpetually in “mom mode,” reminding everyone to use the restroom before leaving the hotel and checking in with her kids every hour. She may even cut your food for you at dinner, all while missing her little ones.
4. The On-Point Mom
The On-Point Mom always looks fabulous, effortlessly turning heads in jeans when everyone else is dressed up. She’s the go-to for beauty tips and walks into the pool area in a stylish cover-up while the rest of us are in basic towels.
5. The Planner Mom
She organizes everything, from hotel bookings to games and activities. Without her meticulous planning, the trip might never have happened. She’s the glue of the group and often the reason the moms have all come together.
6. The One Drink and She’s Tipsy Mom
This mom is all about fun, and just half a martini is enough to get her giggling. After a year of nursing and juggling babies, this getaway is her chance to unwind and enjoy herself.
7. The Busy Mom
She’s juggling a job, kids, and a million other responsibilities. Always the last to arrive and the first to leave, she shows up with only a small bag, packed in record time because she’s always on the go.
8. The Sleep-Deprived Mom
While all moms are exhausted, this one seizes the opportunity to sleep in and savor a warm breakfast without interruptions. She’s the one who will relish every moment of peace and quiet, enjoying a meal without needing to share it.
The beauty of a moms’ getaway is that no matter how different these women are, they share a common bond: the love for their little ones.
So, how did our getaway turn out? Well, we dressed up for a nice dinner and then headed straight back to our hotel suite! After tending to our sore feet from the heels we wore, we crafted and shared some wine. We stayed up late, laughing and reminiscing about our kids—the very reason we came together in the first place.
