The Joys of Being an Engaged Parent

Yesterday was Clara’s seventh birthday, and thankfully, she had the day off from school due to those so-called optional parent conferences (seriously, who are they kidding?). This gave us the perfect opportunity to celebrate her big day together. My mission was clear: to be the best mom I could be. The attentive, fun-loving mom. The unflappable mom.

The day kicked off with a special breakfast—homemade chocolate chip pancakes. Clara looked at me with wide eyes, “You can make pancakes?” You bet, sweetie!

I spent a good chunk of the morning assembling various toys that I probably should have avoided buying in the first place, given their complicated instructions. But I powered through every last one, only muttering a few choice words and ending up with a couple of mystery pieces left over.

In the afternoon, we headed to a pinball museum for her birthday bash, joined by her friends for a day filled with fun. I played along, tossing a football and joining in games of catch while also trying to be the cheerful hostess. Remarkably, I didn’t raise my voice once. Patience? I had it in spades. If it took her twenty minutes to lace up her shoes, I rolled with it.

Whenever she needed me, I was right there, fully present. No work distractions, no television keeping her entertained, and absolutely no “I’ll be there in a minute.” I was 100% engaged, all day long.

As I tucked Clara into bed that night, I asked if she enjoyed her birthday. “It was the best!” she exclaimed, and my heart melted.

This day served as a great reminder of the importance of unplugging and dedicating undivided attention to our children. They deserve more than just a quick breakfast and a mom who gets easily frustrated. Engaging deeply made me happy, and those late hours spent catching up on chores felt worthwhile. Sure, it was tiring, and I’m grateful birthdays come only once a year. Because let’s be honest, keeping it all together is utterly exhausting.
