A California high school cross country team has created a heartwarming initiative by taking shelter dogs out for runs, and it’s a match made in heaven! The students from St. Joseph High School recently gathered about a dozen pups in need of some exercise and companionship for what might just be the cutest dog run ever.
“It’s a win-win for everyone involved—the cross country team gets to volunteer, and the shelter dogs enjoy a fun outing,” said Jenna Martin, the community outreach coordinator for Santa Barbara County Animal Services. “Tired dogs equal happy dogs!”
One particularly adorable pup named Max was so worn out from the adventure that he had to be carried back by his high school running buddy. The team’s coach, Tom Rivera, shared a delightful video of their several-mile run on social media, noting, “I’m not sure who had more fun, the dogs or the kids. It was such a great experience, and we’re looking forward to doing it again very soon!”
Coach Rivera came up with the idea when considering how to help the teens meet their required volunteer hours. “I figured it would be a fantastic way to pair the kids with some dogs and get them active,” he explained. “And that’s exactly what we did!”
Living in a shelter can be stressful for dogs, and getting outside for a run not only helps them physically but also provides much-needed companionship. It’s a valuable lesson for the students about the importance of helping those who are vulnerable and have been abandoned. Coach Rivera hopes to organize another group run for the full team at the start of the upcoming season, which shelters everywhere will surely support, as they are always on the lookout for volunteers.
“The dogs were so thrilled to be outdoors, but some of them weren’t in the best shape,” the coach remarked. “They had a blast, barking and running around like crazy!”
