A brave dog named Buddy has been hailed as a hero after helping to keep a 14-year-old boy alive during a harrowing 44-hour ordeal in the woods. The boy, named Alex Martinez, was attending a summer camp nestled in the stunning Sierra Madre Oriental mountains of Mexico when he became separated from his group while searching for firewood.
According to rescue officials, Alex lost his footing and tumbled down a ravine while trying to navigate the terrain. Despite only having met Buddy a few hours earlier, the dog refused to leave his side. “He stayed with me the entire time, which made me feel safe,” Alex shared with reporters. The duo spent cold nights nestled under a tree, huddling together for warmth. “I wrapped my arms around Buddy to keep us both warm,” he added.
In addition to providing companionship, Buddy also led Alex to a nearby water source, ensuring they both stayed hydrated as they awaited rescue. Thanks to Buddy’s unwavering loyalty, Alex was able to survive until he was found by local authorities, who airlifted both the boy and his canine companion out of the wilderness.
Deputy Chief of Police, Carlos Ramirez, noted how fortunate Alex was to have Buddy by his side. “It’s easy to get lost in these mountains, especially with the cold nights at such high elevation,” he remarked. While Alex showed signs of exhaustion and dehydration, he was mostly unharmed and taken to a local hospital for precautionary checks.
