Just yesterday, I had a moment of clarity during my yoga practice—a space where I often find my deepest insights. Our instructor encouraged us to reflect on that one person who loves us unconditionally, dedicating our practice to them. Instantly, my thoughts turned to my children. Their love is boundless, fierce, and unwavering. Then the instructor posed a thought-provoking question: Are we reciprocating that love? Do our kids truly know how deeply we care for them?
This notion often weighs on my mind; I contemplate the legacy I am crafting for my children, the memories they will carry, and the kind of role model I aspire to be. When they look back, what will they remember about me? Am I embodying the values I wish to instill in them? Am I treating them with the respect and kindness I hope for in return?
As their mother and the chief decision-maker in our home, it’s all too easy to get lost in the daily grind—tasks, chores, errands. I sometimes forget to simply be present. I lose sight of the fleeting beauty in these moments with my kids, and time slips away. They’re growing up so fast, and each day presents a dwindling opportunity for me to positively influence their lives.
I bear the responsibility for their discipline and accountability; I set the standards, enforce consequences, and do it all without a partner to share the load. It can be overwhelming, but it’s also an incredible gift. I have the chance to leave a lasting impression on my children that will shape their futures in profound ways.
During my practice, I came to a powerful realization: I will love my children each day as if it were our last together. Because, in a sense, it is. The child they are today will transform by tomorrow. I will never again have this exact moment with them, so I choose to make the most of every single interaction.
