In a world that often demands we accomplish more and achieve greater, the simple joys of life can easily get overshadowed by our endless to-do lists. As parents, we sometimes unintentionally pass this pressure onto our children. They are expected to join sports teams, possess the latest toys, travel to extravagant places, master musical instruments, attend prestigious schools, wear trendy outfits, and achieve countless milestones. By the time they reach junior high, many kids feel overwhelmed and burnt out, and honestly, it can be exhausting just thinking about their schedules.
Reflecting on my own childhood, I cherish the carefree afternoons spent with friends. I vividly remember a day in middle school when I was with three friends, feeling utterly bored. Our conversation might have gone something like this:
Me: Ugh, I can’t stand this day anymore. I’m so bored and we’ve run out of snacks.
Lily: Seriously! We need to do something epic, something that everyone will remember!
Chloe: Wait…
Us: What?
Chloe: Let’s dress up like pirates!
Us: Yesss!
Anna: And we should ride our bikes around town!
Us: Yesss!
That’s exactly what we did, and it was a hilarious adventure. At 13, we had the freedom and space to be silly, to embrace the weirdness, and to create memorable moments. More than anything, I want my kids to experience those same unforgettable moments.
My favorite times with my children often arise spontaneously. Whether it’s the warmth of morning cuddles, relaxing on the patio while they play with water, chuckling at my son’s corny jokes, or jumping in fright at a scene from Zootopia, these little moments bring immense joy. If we consciously seek them out, we can all discover these gems.
Recently, I’ve been focusing on creating more of these moments by:
- Putting my phone away to avoid distractions.
- Making eye contact while my child narrates their story, no matter how long it takes.
- Constructing blanket forts in the yard, despite the laundry waiting.
- Painting their nails with every color of the rainbow, even if it leads to complaints later.
- Turning down the radio in the car for a collaborative storytelling session.
- Brushing her hair gently to avoid tears, which sometimes leads to a little bickering.
- Turning ordinary time into a mini-vacation with games and bubbly drinks.
- Simply being present, even if it’s just for a brief 15 minutes, because kids can sense when we’re truly with them.
It doesn’t take much to show our kids the beauty of slowing down, listening, and giving them the freedom to enjoy life as the unique individuals they are meant to be.
