First Birthday, Take Two

When it comes to capturing those precious moments, not every parent is a photography whiz, but the landscape is changing rapidly. With smartphones in hand, sharing images on social media platforms and via email is easier than ever. “Look at my little one! Aren’t they the absolute cutest?” It’s a way to showcase our adorable children and create a visual diary of their milestones. Even the less enthusiastic shutterbugs manage to snap those unforgettable moments, from the birth to all the essential “firsts.”

First bath. First smile. First tooth. First steps. And, of course, the first birthday.

Then, there are the more artistic parents, like myself, who happen to teach photography. Brace yourselves, kids! Get ready for your every waking moment to be immortalized—provided it can fit into a creative triptych or be shot from a quirky angle, perhaps even in black and white or sepia.

As the twins’ first birthday approached, I was determined to capture the best photographs possible. I usually have a strict budget of $10 per outfit for each child, but when I stumbled upon the most adorable onesie tuxedos, complete with a bow tie and tails, I couldn’t resist! Forget the budget; my boys would look downright dapper for their birthday celebration.

The day of the party arrived. The boys were dressed impeccably, balloons floated around the room, and the cake was ready to be devoured. I began snapping photos from every conceivable angle, adjusting depth of field and aperture settings like a pro. Oh, how I adore my Nikon DSLR! A few friends offered to bring their lesser cameras, but they knew better than to compete with my photographic prowess. “No worries, I’ll just send you the best shots later!”

The celebration went off without a hitch—everyone enjoyed the food and cake, and left at a reasonable hour. After bathing the twins, I eagerly sat down at my computer, ready to relive the magic through my stunning photographs. I inserted the memory card into my computer and suddenly felt a wave of heat wash over me. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. No. Card. In. Camera. My stomach dropped, and I felt tears well up. I dreaded telling my partner, but there was no hiding this disaster.

His reaction was an unfortunate mix of humor and mockery. “Wow, great job, Mommy! Nice work!” followed by a hilarious impersonation of Homer Simpson. It was a moment I would have preferred to forget.

But I quickly decided on my next steps. I washed the tuxedos, and the following afternoon, I dressed the boys in them again. Balloons were re-inflated, leftover snacks were set out, and cake was on the table. This time, the memory card was firmly in place.

“Alright, boys! Time to dig in!” I encouraged, hoping for another round of messy fun—just what I wanted for those photos. Thankfully, I managed to capture the images I had envisioned, and it turns out that the second attempt went much smoother than the first.
