In a remarkable act of courage, a Colorado mom saved her 5-year-old son from a mountain lion attack right in their backyard. Hearing her child’s screams while he played outside with his older brother, she rushed to the scene only to find the wild animal on top of her little boy.

According to local reports, the mother, whose name has not been disclosed, bravely pulled at the mountain lion’s paw, only to realize that the creature had her son’s entire head inside its mouth. “She managed to pry the cat’s jaws apart,” shared Deputy Tom Anderson with the local sheriff’s office. “She truly is a hero.” The mother fought off the mountain lion long enough to grab her son and escape to safety.

Fortunately, the boy’s father returned from a jog just as the attack unfolded. He quickly took both his son and wife to a nearby hospital. The young boy suffered serious injuries to his head, neck, and face and was airlifted to a children’s hospital in Denver. His mother sustained minor injuries on her hands and legs but was treated and released later.

Authorities mentioned that the outcome could have been drastically different had the mountain lion been larger. “This was a younger cat,” Deputy Anderson noted. “If it had been a bigger lion, we’d be talking about a much more tragic situation.”

Following the incident, a U.S. Forest Service officer located the mountain lion and it was euthanized. Colorado is home to approximately 4,500 mountain lions, making encounters with these wild animals a possibility for residents. Matt Roberts from Colorado Parks and Wildlife emphasized the importance of standing firm against such predators. “You need to show that you’re not easy prey,” he said. It’s worth noting that since 1990, only three people in Colorado have lost their lives to mountain lion attacks.

In another incident, a fisherman in Colorado survived a mountain lion attack in July 2015, showcasing the inherent risks of outdoor activities in wildlife-rich areas.
