If Moms Created Their Own Slang

As a mom in my 30s, I often find myself feeling out of the loop when it comes to trendy slang. I’ll admit, I’ve resorted to Googling terms just to figure out who this Felicia is that everyone seems to be saying goodbye to. Clearly, relying on Urban Dictionary to stay current isn’t exactly stylish, and I definitely shouldn’t be using these phrases in their correct context.

However, when it comes to the language of parenting, I’ve got it down. I can interpret toddler babble like a pro and distinguish between a baby saying “Ma! Ma!” and “Ma? Ma?” Given all the contributions moms have made to the world, we deserve the chance to redefine slang in our own way.

1. On Fleek

Real version: When something looks great, e.g., “This outfit is on fleek.”
Mom version: A fantastic bargain from the flea market, e.g., “I snagged this outfit on fleek for just $10!” Both my dress and pinwheel are on fleek!

2. Netflix and Chill

Real version: A euphemism for intimacy (Netflix may or may not be involved).
Mom version: Binge-watching a show and falling asleep by 8:30 p.m., e.g., “Settling in for a night with Frank Underwood!”

3. Bae

Real version: An affectionate term, short for “before anything else.”
Mom version: A cute nickname for bagels, e.g., “I could really go for a bae and a schmear right now.”

4. Squad

Real version: Your close group of friends.
Mom version: Referring to the kids, e.g., “Sorry for the delay; it took forever to get the squad ready.”
Bonus: Squad Goals: Achieving a parenting win, e.g., “No sibling squabbles today! #SquadGoals!”

5. Stay Woke

Real version: Being conscious of social issues.
Mom version: Surviving on little sleep, e.g., “The baby was up all night. I’m just trying to stay woke.” Stay woke like a boss!

By the time you read this, most of these terms might be outdated, but I eagerly await the next wave of mom-friendly slang! Until then, bye, Felicia! (Wishing a lovely day to anyone named Felicia!)
