Have you ever tried to compile a list of all the essential things kids should learn before growing up? It can be overwhelming! No wonder it takes 18 or more years to nurture a fully developed adult. While some lessons, like advanced algebra, might seem important in school, they may not hold much significance in adult life. (I know, math enthusiasts. Algebra is fascinating, but as an English major, the only time I’ve needed it is to assist my teenage son with his math homework. Go figure!)
However, certain skills are crucial for raising well-rounded, successful, and happy individuals. Beyond the basics of cooking, laundry, and personal finance, there are other essential life lessons—ones that many adults still grapple with—that I’m determined to instill in my kids. Here are ten of them:
-
Offering, Asking For, and Accepting Help
In a world that often champions independence, asking for help can feel like a weakness. Yet, we are social beings designed to support one another. I want my children to understand that while they are capable, there’s no shame in seeking assistance when needed. -
Saying No
Children are often taught to comply, but it’s important for them to learn to say “no” when necessary. Whether it’s rejecting an unsafe situation or declining an unwise request, kids should feel empowered to assert themselves respectfully and firmly. -
Saying Yes
Conversely, life is full of unique opportunities that may come only once. Encourage your kids to embrace these chances, even if they feel scared or uncertain. Taking calculated risks can lead to growth and memorable experiences. -
Expressing Gratitude
Life will inevitably have its ups and downs. Teaching kids to express gratitude for the small things can help them navigate challenges and appreciate what they have, even as they strive for more. -
Admitting When They’re Wrong
Mistakes are part of life. Children need to learn how to take responsibility for their actions and offer sincere apologies. Teaching them to acknowledge their errors and express regret can foster personal growth and stronger relationships. -
Making New Friends
Kids may find themselves in new environments where they don’t know anyone. Teaching them how to strike up a conversation and seek out like-minded individuals can ease the transition and enrich their lives. -
Avoiding Toxic Relationships
While fostering friendships is important, it’s equally crucial to identify unhealthy relationships. If someone is manipulative or consistently negative, it’s vital for kids to recognize when it’s time to step away for their emotional well-being. -
Standing Up for What’s Right
From witnessing bullying to encountering injustice, children have many chances to practice integrity. Encouraging them to stand firm in their beliefs, even when it’s unpopular, will serve them throughout life. -
Always Striving for Improvement
Instead of aiming for perfection, teach kids to focus on gradual improvement. Encouraging them to be a little better each day can help them develop a healthy mindset and achieve excellence over time. -
Being Able to Laugh at Life
A sense of humor can be a powerful tool for coping with life’s challenges. I want my kids to find joy and laughter, even in tough times. Sharing a laugh can be incredibly healing and uplifting.
This list represents some of the fundamental life skills I believe are important. I recognize there are countless others, and I’d love to hear what additional skills other parents might consider essential. (But I’ll maintain that advanced math doesn’t make the cut!)

Summary: Teaching children critical life skills such as asking for help, setting boundaries, and maintaining a sense of humor can significantly enhance their ability to navigate the complexities of adulthood. Helping them build a toolkit of these essential skills will prepare them for a successful and fulfilling life.
