To explore how playtime influences emotional and social growth in children, Thompson conducted interviews with 150 kids, parents, educators, psychologists, and toy industry specialists. She discovered that “doll play fosters a range of social and emotional skills. Boys are interested in dolls, yet many parents and boys view this play as stigmatized, and the term ‘doll’ itself can be a stumbling block.”
Her findings were eye-opening. Traditional toys often lack the human connection that dolls provide. Action figures, trucks, and blocks don’t encourage the imaginative role-playing that allows children to engage in conversations and express feelings, which is more common in play with dolls.
This insight led Thompson to create Adventure Pals, dolls that blend the excitement of action figures with the emotional bond of a beloved stuffed animal. She refers to the dolls as “pals,” and following a successful crowdfunding campaign, they are now available on her website.
In terms of doll variety, Thompson utilized her research to guide her choices. “We studied popular preschool play scenarios and combined them with nurturing elements. Why can’t a superhero or explorer also be caring?” she explained.
