A Request to My Kids: Just One Veggie, Please!

Dear Ava and Leo,

I know it might feel like a big ask, so I’m framing this as a gentle request rather than a command or a bribe involving ice cream treats, which, let’s be honest, is a bit of a tactic here.

So, here it goes: Could you please eat just one veggie?

I get that your instinct is to resist vegetables—it’s practically written in your DNA. I certainly don’t want to start a food battle like the ones our parents waged on us. But here’s the deal: the sweet and fatty cravings you have were hardwired during prehistoric times, long before our food system became a maze of processed and unhealthy options.

That’s why I’m asking you to munch on this organic carrot or perhaps a bit of spinach or kale. Remember that kale? Your dad grew it! And by “we,” I mean him. I didn’t exactly play a role in that.

And no, I’m not diving into another parenting book to figure out how to make veggies appealing. It looks like I have my hands full with adult coloring books instead!

I’m also not going to resort to sneaking Swiss chard into smoothies like some folks suggest. Honestly, that sounds like way too much effort.

You should feel lucky to live in a place where fresh organic produce is accessible. It’s not just about gummy bear vitamins, which can’t be your only source of nutrients.

However, just putting a carrot on your tongue and refusing to chew it isn’t going to do much either. I’m no nutrition expert—most of my calories come from ice cream after you’re asleep! Speaking of which, Leo, what was up with you coming upstairs and making a mess the other night while I was enjoying my ice cream and watching a show? That was a real downer!

But back to the veggies: I’m asking you to just eat one. One single vegetable. Please.

With love,
Your Mom
