There’s a lot to love about park outings. They’re free, the kids can run wild while getting exercise, and I can usually find a bench to relax (and sneak in some snacks). Sunshine, laughter, and moments spent with my children are priceless. Parks can truly be amazing. Hooray for parks!
However, after countless hours spent at various parks across the country with my kids, I’ve discovered that sometimes, they can be a real challenge.
-
The Build-Up
Never, ever tell a child you’re heading to the park until you’re right there, watching them swing. Otherwise, you’ll regret teaching them how to express excitement! -
The Shoe Dilemma
When that one kid decides to kick off their shoes, suddenly everyone else wants to follow suit. My mind races with thoughts of hidden dangers underfoot—razor blades, broken bottles, and sticky gum. Cue the frantic hovering! -
Park Bathrooms
Ah, the joys of public restrooms. They’re free and accessible, but that also means they’re open to anyone, including those who may leave them in less-than-pleasant conditions. -
The Teeter-Totter Trouble
Trying to balance kids of different sizes on a teeter-totter can lead to unexpected launches. I’ve experienced more than one moment of panic as I accidentally sent my child flying! -
Remembering I’m Not 12
I really should have “Do not try to swing on the monkey bars!” tattooed on my hands after too many bruises and blisters. -
The ‘Look At Me’ Challenge
I love watching my kids showcase their skills, but after the 500th “Look, I’m balancing a leaf on my head!” it can get a bit tiresome. -
Other Kids
While my kids are delightful, other children can be a handful. Let’s face it, we all feel that way sometimes! -
The Parents of Other Kids
Most are great, but occasionally, you run into the ones who can drain your energy. -
The Park of Endless Anxiety
Some parks are so vast that it feels like you’ve lost your kid in a maze. I still wake up in a cold sweat from the memory of my panic in one of those places. -
The Big Kid Attraction
My youngest has never been satisfied with the toddler area; she always wants to conquer the big kid structures, which makes my heart race! -
When My Child Acts Out
There are days when it’s my kid causing chaos, and if it’s too close to nap or snack time, I’m ready to flee the scene—just as a meltdown begins! -
The Ice Cream Man
When that music starts playing, my children’s dreams of delicious treats crash down because I forgot cash. Ugh! -
The Playground ‘Rules’
I’m looking at you, slide etiquette! Some parents are very passionate about whether kids can go up the slide, and I’m just here thinking—if no one’s using it, why not? -
The Spinny Toy of Doom
You know the one. I once lost track of my child on one of those while trying to keep his sibling safe on another structure. He didn’t walk straight for days! -
The Departure
Leaving the park is never an easy task. Even after hours of fun, no one is ever ready to go. My attempts to coax them out often result in tears.
Parks are wonderful places for family bonding, even if they come with their own set of challenges. Amidst the fun, there are plenty of reminders to shout things like, “Be careful! Don’t eat that! Gentle touches!” Plus, let’s not forget the delightful array of germs we bring home. Yay parks!

Summary
